"You're just the man I wanted to see," Ricardo says briskly. "Can you help me read some more of Lia's writing? Look at this--there's quite a few of these, I'm pretty sure they all say different things so--I need you to read this."He stuffs the papers into your hands. Before you can start reading, he snatches a few of them back, scanning the contents once more, and looking up at the television, which was playing a film of some kind before he paused it.
The actor has been caught in an awkward frame, but it gives you a good look at their attire--the character is wearing the hanfu traditionally meant for men, accompanied by the exaggeratedly long sleeves you associate with Chinese opera costume. There's not much else on stage to indicate where or when the story takes place, but the white swags of cloth in the background make you think of funerals.
(Of death.)

You knock on Julia’s door, eyes catching onto the bandage wrapped loosely around your knuckles. You don’t remember doing that, and your eyebrows furrow in confusion. You flex your hand, testing the dressing, and watch as it shifts up to your fingers. Far too loose. You almost tear it off, but before you can, the door swings open.
“Aurora?” Have you ever heard her so surprised? Yes, when she saw you for the first time since your escape.
That’s a fair reaction. It’s past midnight, isn’t it? She’s dressed in an oversized shirt and shorts, her hands fidgeting warily at her side. You've woken her up, and you wonder briefly who she had thought you were. A better woman would feel guilty for the intrusion but you don’t. How many nights did the Farm keep you up with torture while she slept bundled up in her overpriced sheets? She owes you this.

Your wine cup slips through your numb fingers, smashing against the tiled ground with an explosion of glass. Or maybe you’ve thrown it, you can’t tell. The sound is muffled, so quiet that you wonder if it ever happened at all. But it did because everyone is staring at you now. Everyone’s thoughts are on you.
You laugh.
The sound is frenzied and unstable. You couldn’t stop if you tried, body shuddering with hysterics that make you feel sick.
It’s okay. That thought isn’t about you, it’s for you. Chen must see you because you feel his comfort like a blanket. It smothers the fire you’ve set to yourself and the laughter dies on your lips. Micah. He thinks your name like its an invitation into his mind and you dive into it. He’s staring straight at you, carefully pushing past people to get to you.
You look delusional. He’s worried.

And then something strikes you in the gut, hard enough that you can’t breathe and your head spins with stars. You throw yourself backward and draw up your fists. You may be drunk, but if he wants a fight, you will fight until he kills you. But he hasn’t moved. His hands remain unmoved at his side.
The feeling comes again. But you’re prepared this time. It’s fear. Your own, and it’s so strong that your heart feels like it will tear open. You don’t realize why your hands are shaking, why the panic attack comes so strongly, so brutally, until you notice that his thoughts have stopped rambling.
He is staring at you like he’s seen a ghost.
He recognizes you.

I took it home and I was just... looking at her things, you know, it's mostly seashells and hairpins and postcards and--but I found these... papers? There's writing on it, but it's not like... regular writing, I don't think? It looks sort of fancy, but I can't really tell. I never asked, but... can you read in Chinese?"You nod. With any luck, it'll be something you can understand, maybe even something useful or interesting, give his hungry mind a morsel to chew on so it doesn't eat itself.
