Summary
Albert Wesker knows this man—he’d done his research on Miskatonic University long before he and William chose it as the school for them to attend their final year of medical training. He knows all about the massacre, the sentencing, the police reports, the rumors. Half of his research for their choosing of the school was researching Doctor Herbert West alone—his reports on brain death and resurrection proved to interest Wesker greatly, though Birkin had remained skeptical of the prospect, waving it aside to instead praise his work.
Where Birkin sees competition, Wesker sees opportunity and, in their scramble to further their research upon this newest strain, their differences have proven a hurdle larger than they can handle.

Why was he doing this? Why was he here, at Herbert’s house, on the outskirts of Arkham, with Herbert’s daughter, preparing to experiment in his laboratory? It had been well over twenty years since they had last seen each other, since they were last crushed by the ceiling of their basement and the neighboring underground crypt of the cemetery, since they had last experimented with the power of God and reanimated the dead—together.

Dan avait tellement de sang sur les mains pour rien de plus que le rêve d'un fou. Chaque jour de plus était une nouvelle marche descendue de l'enfer. Il ne recevait rien en échange de ses sacrifices. Summary
Dan separated the dirt and rocks from the brick of the demolished basement wall. He did this, not thinking about the man who tore it apart in the first place, or how smug he looked when he scared Dan from within the tunnel, laughing. The light from under him illuminating his face in an unsettling way, creating the perfect image of a mad scientist. Dan did not smile at the memory. He certainly did not think of where he might be now. He only thought about the difference between dirt, rock, and brick, how to sort them and where he should put them. He thought about the motion of digging the rubble up and turning the shovel over, and how the repetitive movement strained his back and arms even more.
He wished the entire basement collapsed, so he wouldn’t have to deal with any of this. One mass grave for the buried man and all his blasphemous creations.

Dan tries to move on with his Herbert-free life after the events of Bride, but is finding it strangely difficult, due to some complicated feelings.

Summary
Even though he still couldn't quite understand Dan, understanding people at all wasn't exactly his forte, Herbert found comfort in his predictability. He'd grown used to Dan's instability, his mood swings, how he'd have little episodes where he'd do nothing but laze about. The unfamiliar, but not unwelcome, fondness he felt for the other man made him willing to deal with these... quirks. Dan would always eventually return back to his normal self, so he had simply stopped worrying and just left him alone.
That night when he returned home to find the place dark and deathly silent, Herbert would discover he'd made a mistake.
He should've worried.
Now, Herbert was left just as alone as Dan had been.

The kind where all he wanted to do was destress with a casual one night stand. He was reasonably grateful that it was just the normal kind of shitty instead of the "getting attacked by a zombie your mad scientist roommate reanimated" kind of shitty, but the fact that that differentiation even existed made him feel kind of worse.
His life had really devolved.

Life with Herbert West had been nothing short of Hell.
Dan was trapped, aching to escape yet hesitating and turning back every time he reached the exit. There was no lock or chain holding him there, only his hopeless devotion to the only person he had left; the same person behind all of his suffering in the first place.
One morning, he wakes up to find the scientist having been seemingly spirited away, no hint of him having ever been there in the first place. The only thing he’d left behind was any responsibility he held for the horrors Arkham had faced. It becomes Dan’s cross to bare as consequences finally come crashing down around him. He is a sacrificial lamb, ripe for the slaughter. Ripe to atone for sins that are not his to answer for, not alone.
Life with Herbert West had been nothing short of Hell.
Life without him is much worse. -

Dan returns from the hospital early, absolutely distraught about what’s happened during his shift. An abandoned baby had been brought into the ER in critical condition. Despite his best efforts, the little girl lost her life. After learning about this tragedy and knowing about Dan’s natural paternal nature, Herbert gets an idea. As he typically does, Herbert acts on impulse without considering any possible repercussions.
It goes surprisingly well, but now he has to deal with the complications of having a baby in the house! Can Herbert manage to keep himself from getting attached? Is he willing or equipped for fatherhood? Will co-parenting affect his relationship with Dan?

Things are tense between Daniel and Herbert after the events leading up to the mausoleum's collapse to the point where it's stifling. Misunderstandings and mutual hurt leaves the two men at odds and, in such close confines, Dan leaves to decompress for a bit.
He doesn't return.
Dan disappears without a trace, as if spirited away into the night. Without any hint of where he could've gone, Herbert is left to fumble to try and find him with little to no information to go off of. In the mean time, Dan finds himself face to face with a monster of a man with nothing but revenge on his mind.
