Everyone has a past they like to keep hidden and Natori is no different, especially when it was filled with fear and disgust. He often tries to forget these memories and move on but they still linger at the back of his mind like a bitter aftertaste. Sadly what the exorcist never expected was for Natsume to meet these echoes of his past in the form of his younger self, a young boy who was accused of bringing misfortune upon his family, a kind honest child named Shuuichi.

Natori Shuuichi never did well in the summer heat. Sixteen, his hair overgrown and nails perpetually stained dark after neurotically practicing calligraphy and suibokuga. He got into a habit of copying the ofuda he found in the warehouse, using trial and error to figure out what they could do.
At most, it was just a hobby, something to pass the time until he was a grown up.
At most, it was an act of rebellion that acknowledged the rot inside of him.I can’t try to ignore it anymore, the most I can do is find a way to be free of it all.

-“There is an old rumor that’s been circling among the ayakashi for a while." she says, and after a short, thoughtful, pause, not too sure whether she should continue what she started; "a rumor about that Natsume kid you're so fond of”.Seiji gives in to a sudden spark of curiosity that seemed to appear from thin air when the young boys’ name is brought up.
-”Now what kind of rumor would that be?” he asks, hiding his heavy curiosity.
-”They say his grandmother had a kid with an ayakashi. It’s an old tale though” she lets out with a sigh and adds “quite bold of her, don’t you think?” With slow increasing confidence in her words.

By midnight, all the papers are in order. Bureaucracy moves quickly when you have enough money to throw at the right people. Takashi’s guardians sign him away like he’s a used car they don’t want anymore and arrange a time to drop off all of his possessions, and that’s it.
Shuuichi is no longer an only child.
“He’ll be your responsibility,” his father says on the ride home, as if he’s not talking to a teenager who shouldn’t even be responsible for himself, let alone a five-year-old.
Shuuichi nods anyway. Takashi is asleep against his side, a heavy reminder. Shuuichi will do whatever he has to. He’ll be whatever he needs to be.
He promised Takashi he would keep the monsters away, and that’s what he’s going to do.
