Summary
Marcus is a Dragon rider for the Empire who has lost his dragon companion in battle. Esca is a scrappy war orphan who made it out of slavery after the fall of his native kingdom and is now a physician. He is hired to tend to Marcus, and the two bond despite the deep wounds of long held animosity between their people. When dreams of a dragon in peril begin to plague Marcus, against his better judgement Esca accompanies him on a perilous journey beyond the Empire's borders, into a wilderness that Esca knows well.

”It is in my mind to go alone.”
”No, you–” Marcus says, cutting himself off when he hears the command in his argument even before speaking it out loud.
”I will leave in the morning,” Esca says. He is crouched in front of Marcus, hands idly pulling at the unkept weeds at his feet. Marcus wants to slip off the bench and lower himself to his knees, touch Esca’s cheek the way Esca had touched his on the bank of the river where he thought he would die. Tell him what Esca had told him then. Not a command, but an unshakeable truth.
”I would come with you,” he says instead, knowing that Esca’s mind will not be changed.
Esca leaves in search of his family with a promise to return. He doesn’t. Another post-movie fic.

Esca still doesn’t meet his eyes and Marcus knows he can’t demand that of him, because he doesn’t remember. He doesn’t remember that he has loved Marcus for the past few years. He doesn’t know that Marcus was ready to propose. He wants to be angry, but he has no one to be angry at because this isn’t even Esca’s fault.

Summary
Set in Elizabethan England. Marcus and Esca are perhaps a couple of years younger than they were in "The Eagle." Most of the characters—Richard Burbage, John Heminges, Thomas Pope, Will Kempe, etc.—were actual members of the theatre company to which Shakespeare belonged. This story takes place while the company still performed at The Theatre, before the construction of The Globe.
Marcus is a recently-hired principal actor in Shakespeare's company, The Lord Chamberlain's Men. (During that period, of course, women's roles were played by actors, and youthful female characters were often played by the apprentice boys.) Because of the popularity of Romeo and Juliet, the play is to be re-staged a year after its successful first performance, with Marcus as Romeo. Esca, who has been assigned to him as apprentice, is a very reluctant Juliet.
