After five years of relentlessly putting up a siege against the Red Death, Hiccup, the former terrorist known as the Phantom of the Arena, has finally defeated the Archipelago's greatest enemy, putting a definitive end to the dragon raids. Hoping the worst is finally behind him, he returns to Berk, only to find he left more behind than just the girl he loved. And that life still isn’t done with him.
Outside of the Archipelago, Eret, son of Eret, is left with nothing after a mysterious dragon rider destroys his fort and releases the captured dragons his employer sorely needed. Fearing he’ll be killed if he doesn’t, he flees to the Archipelago with what little remains, hoping to find employment in the dragon-infested area. But the threat seems to have followed him, as news spreads of how Berk's infamous Phantom has returned to reclaim what's his. And that people like Eret will never be safe, unless they act against him.

Stoick should have known better. While he didn't know much about his son-especially now-he knew the boy was clever. It should have been no surprise when a guard burst into the Council Meeting and revealed that Hiccup had escaped the cell Stoick put him in...hours after the boy was revealed to have saddled a dragon.
Hiccup is gone, and so is the beast.
They search, but do not find him. Berk falls asleep one night and awakens in the Great Hall, where the torches come to life and cast an image of their isle on the wall, from which floats Hiccup's voice, years younger.
AKA, Hiccup forfeited the final challenge, leaving Astrid with the right to kill the Nightmare. Story picks up in the Race to the Edge era, except Berk never learned the truth of dragons, no one knows how Hiccup really lost his leg, and stories of a hooded 'vigilante' riding a Night Fury have been long whispered...and Berk will see it all unfold.

In the aftermath of the war with Dagur and his Berserkers, the Berkian tribe turns on Hiccup once more. They blame their friendly relationship with the dragons for the conflicts they have faced against both Alvin and Dagur. Nevermind that most are still perfectly happy to have a dragon of their own.
Hiccup's day-to-day life is now just as miserable as it was before he became a 'prodigy' in dragon killing training. When the village isn't treating him like a pariah, they're hurling insults, or sometimes stones, and sneering behind his back. Even the other Riders have bought into it. His only reprieves are his flights with Toothless, which are growing longer and longer, and the time he spends with Astrid. Therefore, when the news comes that Dagur has escaped from the prison on Outcast Island, Hiccup jumps at the chance to track down and recapture the madman.
What he doesn't tell anyone else is that he has no intentions of returning to Berk when he's done. The island he grew up on is a home to him no longer. Settling in on an island outpost with the rest of the Riders, regrettably, following along, frequent encounters with Dagur have Hiccup wondering if the Berserker isn't quite the villain he's always seen him as.
