The Neue Reich, Reinhard von Lohengramm's great effort, has bloomed for a decade and more, but at its roots lay a weakness, one which draws its lineage back to the early death of the 1st Goldenlowe Kaiser, and thus his inability to properly place about things as he would have wished--as would have been needed.
Alexander Siegfried von Lohengramm, known affectionately as Alec, is the heir to the great, tragically shortly lived, Kaiser--his only child, and son--and unto his shoulders, and those of the other stars that will glitter in the reflection of an ocean we would call history, falls the fate of this generation--this legacy.

“That’s my father,” he said, pointing at the photograph with his left hand, his right hand still held stiffly behind his back, and he kept turning so that Emil couldn’t see it. Emil consulted his memory of Alexander’s personal medical record— there would have been a note in there if he was left handed. Immediately, Emil understood that something strange was going on, and that Alexander had not just wandered into his office for a social visit.
“Yes, it is,” Emil said. “I knew him when I was your age.”
“That’s why my mother gave you this job.”
There was no point in lying. “Yes. We knew each other back then.”
Alexander sniffed. “Are you a good doctor?”
“I hope so. Kaiserin Hildegarde isn’t known for having incompetent staff, and I wouldn’t want to lose my job so quickly,” Emil said, trying to joke with the boy.
“I’ll be the judge of that.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”

“Did you love my father?”
Kaiserin Hildegard von Mariendorf blinked, and stared across the room at her son. He flushed, but didn’t look away, eyes meeting hers with mingled embarrassment and determination. Today he had turned seventeen. One more year until her regency was over, and he took his place on the throne. At last finished with the formalities and feasting, Alex and her had been having a simple nightcap before bed. Or so she had thought.
“That’s an……unusual question” she replied at last. “What’s brought it on?” He shrugged.
“Oh, you know” he said. “Everyone always talks about the great Kaiser. I mean, he’s everywhere.” He nodded to the portrait covering the far wall, Reinhard’s face staring out grimly over the room, like it did over so many rooms in the palace. “But nobody ever talks about the man. What he was really like, not just his policies or theories or all the battles he won.”
“It’s difficult” said Hildegard quietly. “There’s not many of us left who remember him. And even for us, it’s hard to separate the Kaiser from the human being after so long. And……we miss him.”
