Summary
John takes Sherlock's death so hard that he reaches the point of suicide attempts. As he tries to move on with his life, he hallucinates the presence of his best friend and eventually just accepts that the face and voice of his friend will haunt him for the rest of his life.
When Sherlock comes back from his two year absence expecting things to just... work out, he gets quite the surprise when John proposes to Mary. Nothing could have prepared Sherlock for the emotional storms he would have to fight through, especially not being afraid of his own best friend when trying to gain back the son that was taken from him.

Canon compliant to 302 and full of spoilers for it, very thoroughly a tragedy. But even dying embers are pretty while they're burning out, right? -

Moriartys face dropped somewhat from amused to the very same unreadable and cold expression no one and especially not Sherlock had been able to read. He could detect a trace of frustration in his dark gaze though, as if the criminal was losing his patience with him a little;
"Come oon dummy, don't be daft. This is your mind, remember. As if you ever needed to hide yourself from me anyway. Not that you could in the first place..."
A story in which Sherlock finds himself on the knife's edge and has a dialogue with the only one who can set him straight.
