In the year 2000, seventeen year old Maicee Hartley moved in next door to Joel Miller and his daughter Sarah after her parents got divorced and Maicee’s mom moved them from London, England to Austin, Texas. Despite only being seventeen, Maicee fell hard and fast for the Miller brothers. She flirted with and teased them both constantly but didn’t actually do anything with them. In 2003, the world turned to shit the night of Joel’s 36th birthday. It was also the night that Maicee lost her mom and Joel lost Sarah. Fifteen years later, in 2018, Tommy, Maicee, and Joel were all living together in the Boston Quarantine Zone with a woman named Tess they met a few years into the post-apocalyptic world. They were all smugglers. Then Tommy left. He didn’t like the smuggling life. Tommy left to join the Fireflies. He didn’t think Joel or Maicee needed him anymore, but he was wrong. He left before Maicee could tell him she was pregnant. Maicee loved both men, but Tommy left anyways. Tommy thought Joel was better for her, but he was wrong. In 2023, smuggling an infected girl while pregnant, and with a five year old child, was not on Maicee’s agenda. She just wanted Joel and Tommy back with her again, but with her daughter this time.

Yn Servopoulos is Tess’ younger sister. She was only fifteen when the Cordyceps outbreak happened on September 26, 2003. Four almost five years into the outbreak, when she's nineteen, she and Tess meet two brothers, Joel and Tommy Miller. They team up with them and fight together until they reach the Boston QZ. Over the years yn grows a crush on the eldest brother, Joel.
But she hides her crush because, one, He's older than she is; Joel was 32 when the outbreak happened; she was only fifteen. That makes him seventeen years older than her. Now that didn't really bother her much, at least not in this world. Joel was strong and fearless, or at least he seemed to be fearless. He knew how to take charge and he protected the ones he cared about. The second thing was that yn was at least eight percent sure Joel and her sister were in some kind of relationship. Third of all, she was definitely sure the man hated her.
When twenty years into the outbreak they find themselves smuggling a fourteen year old girl out of the QZ to get her to a lab because she's immune and could be the key to a cure, they lose Tess on the way, leaving them to only have each other. Secrets come out and feelings become confused and awkward.

Summary
Facing my own mother while she went ballistic with a kitchen knife in her hand was not my objective as an 11 year old, and living through a bunch of world-changing events leading to something beyond repair wasn't on the bingo card a year later either.
Time and fate were intertwined and cruel, life had no mercy if you didn't sneak into liking of those who sat above. The Council whose hands barely worked during their lives were supposed to be graceful and a sign of purity, knowledge. Their minds tainted power as they were made of quintessence. It made them sick to the stomach to see children be brought into the mortal world, children whose fate was sealed long before those from the above came.
For there are things not even they could control, they rather set on a treason and kill their own than see the world they know change. Change, it didn't listen to fate. Fate may try and point a different direction but in the end it's the change that's going to make a difference.
The winds of change embarked, their lungs screaming of a metanoia.
