When Dickie takes back his offer for Tom to come along on the Cortina ski trip, Tom ends up staying in Venice that winter with Marge's friend Peter Smith-Kingsley. At first, it looks like Tom has struck gold in upright, unsuspecting, naïve Peter. But things may not be as straightforward as they initially appear...

    Summary

    From the screenplay:

Ripley hikes up Michelangelo's Arcoeli Steps. Then he's
looking down from the Campodoglio at the Forum below. Then
he's walking by the oversized fragments of the Colossus. This
is the real Ripley, the lover of beauty, inspired by art, by
antiquity. He's awed. He's cold. He so much wishes he weren't
    alone.

When Tom asks to get into the bath, Dickie lets him. He is warmed, but like everything is with Dickie there is that hard, cold porcelain edge, rushing up to meet him.

    Summary

Tom felt strange. He moved a knight leftwards to take one of Dickie’s pawns. He cursed a little under his breath and shifted slightly, his knee coming just barely out of the water. Tom watched him, parted his lips, and spoke. “I’m cold. Can I get in?”
Dickie looked up at him, his mouth somewhat open in a loose grin. He left the question in the air for a moment before he spoke again. “Sure.”

    Summary

A camera obscura is a dark room in which a small hole, later called a lens, is made in one of the walls. The light entering through this casts an image of the outside world onto the opposite wall. As is the case with an image through a lens, the outside world is depicted upside down.

Snippets from Tom and Peter’s time together before everything went to shit - where Tom is the darkroom, and Peter his light, showing him what life could be like - though it never fits Tom quite right.

    Summary

‘I hadn’t really expected it to go like this,’ he admitted, craning his head so he could look at Tom. Tom was already looking up at him, one of his eyes slightly closed from the way his cheek rested on Peter’s shoulder.

‘Like what?’ he asked, and Peter smiled.

‘You know. First we argue about Meredith, then you break my heart with the way you talk about yourself. Then you end up crying. And next thing you know, we’re suddenly having sex. You have to admit that’s a rather unusual way for a conversation to end.’

Tom was quiet for a second. Then he muttered almost inaudibly: ‘I can think of some more unusual ways for a conversation to end.’ Peter didn’t ask what he meant.

    ***

In which Peter and Tom's conversation at the end of the movie ends a little differently, and Tom in turn lists off everything good about Peter Smith-Kingsley - only to then have it end in roughly the same way. Sorry, guys. No happy endings here.

Dickie’s attention was like the sun, that’s what Marge had said, he agreed with her, Dickie’s attention was like the sun, the Italian sun, brilliantly warm and all encompassing, when Dickie shined on you there was a short while where you’d get to put on the glasses through which he saw the world, one of art, and leisure, and finery and ease.

    Summary

So Peter kisses him, gentle like he always has been but a reverence shines through now, a devotion put to scripture in a soft kiss to Tom’s neck. Tom pets his hair and imagines him with a halo; with a noose. He wants to cry. And he does, he thinks, but he isn’t sure if it’s Peter or if it’s himself because Peter presses his face to Tom’s, not a kiss but simply a closeness.

    “I’m sorry, Tom.”

“You have nothing to be sorry for.”

Peter takes his shirt off and Tom has lost his tan, living in Venice with Peter—Dickie and Mongi and San Remo have lost their grip on him. Except for Meredith, damned Meredith—but Peter kisses Tom like he can tell that his mind is racing, soft and slow on his pectoral and his stomach.

“I wasn't lying, by the way.” Peter says quietly against Tom’s chest, his beating heart.

    Tom laughs. “About what?”

Peter looks down at him, a small smile on his face. “You are beautiful.”
