To Edrehasivar VII, Ethuverazhid Zhas, Greetings from Shryenet II, Crown of Eshthret.

We send to you our ambassador, Ruthven Eshthretar, in whom we place full faith and confidence. Our realm has long been friendly with your own, and we desire that friendship may continue; thus do we send an embassy to your court, as has not been done for generations, and hope to nurture a mutual understanding.

We pray you to call upon him whenever you have desire of his knowledge, for he is in great need of companions which are neither relatives nor books.

Being A Concise List Of The Ethuverazheise Emperors And The Impact Of Their Reigns
    ~
I wrote these as epigrams for Take These Tower Stones, and as they went down well I’ve organised them into one place! This includes names for all two hundred and eight emperors prior to Maia (a handful of which are canon, and the rest I generated when I was making the epigrams originally so I could jump about without contradicting myself), and also some bonus entries that never made it into the original fic. If anyone would like to use any of these in their own fic, as mentions or jumping-off points, please feel free – just credit me and leave me a comment here so I can come and read!

“These are hundreds of years old,” gritted out Csethiro, digging the third brooch (Item: brooch, diamond and emerald, six pc. each, set in silver, Edrevechelar VI to Parmeno Zhasan) out of Csoru’s drawer. “And they are in with thy garters.”
“I am history too, thou punctilious academic,” said Csoru. “Csoru Zhasan, best looking wife of Varenechibel the Fourth—”
“Thou’rt barely a footnote,” snapped Csethiro.

    Summary

“Shaleän is an… awkward question for the Corat' Dav Arhos,” said Csevet slowly. “And we gather she is not much discussed in noble society… in public noble society, that is. But she is something of a folk figure to those who live on the coast, and they call her the arh’avar, the water-duke. She scandalises, to be sure— she has a wife stowed away in Solunee-over-the-Water, so it’s said— but many of the avarsin pay her huge sums to see their shipments safely across the Chadavean Sea, to smuggle valuables, or sometimes even to conduct raids on rivals’ ships. It has long been suspected that her father pays her great sums to feed him information and safeguard his ships. The Great Avar, we suspect, would not be as rich as he is without Shaleän Sevraseched. So her acknowledgement was generally considered to be long overdue, and we do agree with the Zhasan— we think he means efficiency, and personal investment, in his sending of her.”

(The Great Avar's definition of a 'trade negotiator' is possibly a little loose... so it's just as well that Shaleän is only sort of meant to be doing that.)

Beshelar's first impression of Edrehasivar, seventh of his name, had been... well - not much of one at all. The youth seated in the Tortoise Room was nothing like Varanechibel - not in presence, nor in stature - indeed, he had little family resemblance to the late emperor save the winter-grey of his eyes, and the long, slender fingers twisting nervously together in his lap.

In which Beshelar realises that first impressions don't actually count for much - and that there is more to Edrehasivar than meets the eye.

    Summary

It began, as many things did, at one of Ciris’s parties. The famous tenor Eris Vindar, who had recently come back after a leave of absence from the Zhaö Opera due to contracting a cough and losing his voice, was discussing the travels he had done during his time away.
“We have always wanted to see the Amal’opera,” he was saying, “and so we took a week in Amalo, and made certain to attend every opera house in the city at least once."
Ciris had been engaged in conversation with Osmin Duchenin, but turned his head at once to heed Vindar’s words.
“Well, with respect to present company,” Vindar continued, with a cheeky nod at Osmer Vendecar, a well-known patron of the Amal’opera, “we did not find the Amal’opera the most standout—of course, the singers were magnificently talented, and everything as beautiful as it is famed—but it is another establishment, and quite a different sort of show, which caught our attention…”

Ciris Drazhar, now Emperor Varecoriver, is invited by a friend from the opera world to attend the Vermilion Opera’s controversial smash hit, Zhelsu. Neither the show nor anything else about his visit to Amalo is at all like he expected.

    Summary

Nalis had not felt the weight of his own omissions so keenly since he had heard secondhand, weeks after his recovery, that the Archduke Maia’s entire household had been lost to plague, and that he was presumed as dead as they were– that he was missing, and that perhaps there would be a reward if he were found, and that there were men venturing into the Edonara to trawl for his corpse.

The fact that Prince Idra had made the order a request– that he’d clearly realized he had no real recourse against Nalis if he refused–

Csevet was visibly horrified, stifling himself from correcting the emperor’s phrasing. Nalis caught his eye, trying to seem loyal and reassuring, and said to Prince Idra, “Serenity, we are entirely at your service.”
