And now… dammit, he was getting old.

"What beast?" Albert eventually questioned his coworkers, feeling a long-buried passion stirring within his heart again.
Albert was handed over the newspaper, eyes wide in the face of a sketch of a massive creature spotted lurking the open plains within West Elizabeth. It looked like some form of wolf, though far larger and the illustration emphasized the glowing eyes of the creature.
An ardent reflection of one of mother nature’s most finest and merciless killers, untamed even as the wild lands surrounding it become smothered by humanity’s overreaching palm. The newspaper column was calling for local trappers to hunt it down - apparently it was ‘disturbing’ local livestock and farmers. Though to Albert, it appeared to be the most fascinating animal he’d ever laid eyes on. The true pinnacle of everything he’d ever wanted to capture in a photograph - the true and utter beauty that came from a creature so primal. A photograph of such a monster…
Or, Albert Mason goes on a wild goosechase for a certain predator. Unaware it's closer than he thinks.

"It's okay, son." Dutch reassured him with a sympathetic smile on his face that Arthur had never seen before. "It's okay to cry."
In that moment it suddenly felt like Arthur had a brick on his chest. He stood up and turned his back to Dutch and put his hands over his face so he wouldn't see him cry. "I miss them so much." His voice broke midway through the sentence but he was beyond caring at this point. Everything hurt so much that he didn't even bother trying to hold back his tears.

“D’ya hear what I said, Charles?” Arthur’s turned to face Charles and they’re close enough that Charles can smell the rum and cigarettes on the other man’s breath. They’re close enough that their knees are touching and Charles feels like his entire world has narrowed to that single point of contact.
“‘Course I did, Arthur. You said I was large, like a bear.”
Arthur’s face falls in a comical way and Charles has to bite his cheek to keep from laughing at him.
“No, no, not jus-- I didn’t mean it like that”, Arthur huffs and looks away from Charles. He seems to crestfallen over something, but Charles can’t work out what he could have missed.
Swallowing thickly, Charles lets go of the front of Arthur’s shirt, only to use that hand to gently turn his cheek so they’re face to face again. He leaves his fingers there, his thumb gently rubbing the stubble that’s grown in after a few days without shaving.
“Tell me what you meant then, Arthur.” Charles’ voice is soft, sultry in a way that he knows makes women and girls blush and giggle. He’s tried it on a few men in his time, but the results are nowhere near as consistent. He has no way of knowing how Arthur himself will react to it.

He didn't figure in this random hitchhiker with a death wish that keeps popping up in the middle of nowhere. It proves a major oversight.
