Warnings: some warnings are issued, however I have added some bookmark tags I think are needed. I think the writing—as in style of it—is acidic and gritty in a way and should be taken into consideration too.
This work explores instincts/gender and not fitting within the mold it's supposed to go in—and suffering the expectations, abuse, and exploitation that comes with it. In this, the story builds on gender and power imablances (both because of class/status, and gender—both being interdependent) and how they work to reverse some of them; the conditions to build equality and consent; and the conditions for both of them to be comfortable in their own skin, and find at least a little freedom.
We follow both an alpha and omega suffering from gender dysphoria and not meeting gender expectations. It is shown in an interesting way I think, especially in how they go around the mating cycles and fighting their instincts—and how they work through it (secretly) and find how to regain/relinquish control to align with their 2d gender (moreover, could be seen as outside of the 2d gender trinary).
In conclusion, we see how the biologisation/essentialisation is used to justify a harsh gender hierarchy and division when those frontiers aren't so defined or true in reality, and are more socially constructed than biological; and how gender a prison to them, both metaphorically and litteraly.
