Summary
I choke on the air around me, my rapid breathing becoming halted with retching. There is a foul miasma in the air, reeking of death and decay. I force myself to breathe through my mouth, my hand pinching my nose closed. My other hand raises my body off the ground and into a sitting position, bits of unknown debris poking into my palm and catching onto my skin. I frantically wipe the grime off and onto my pants, the particles clacking to the floor with a ceramic echo. Wide eyed and unseeing, I whip my head around, trying to find any glimmer of light. Anything to ground me.
I hear fabric move to my right. Maybe ten feet away. My attention snaps toward the sound. My breathing stops, and I momentarily forget the smell.
Whatever it is moves some more, a soft rustling sound.
I am paralyzed, terror holding me down in hopes that it doesn't notice me. A part of me realizes it's moot. Of course it noticed. That's why it's moving. Crawling towards me through the dark.
