"In our defense, our lives do kind of suck at the moment," Luke offered with that annoying little bright smile of his. "And I definitely wouldn't say we're mismatched, half of us are dating already!"
Julie snorted. "Willie and Alex are practically a couple," she said.
"Right. Of course. And we are...?" he trailed off, looking at her expectantly.
"Mortal enemies," Julie deadpanned with a straight face.
"That's kind of harsh," Luke said, his demeanor not taking as much of a hit. He still looked hopeful and cheerful. Julie found it annoying. Yes. That was the word.
