One ship, just one, and Penelope stood on the clifftop near her husband’s palace and looked down upon the harbor below, and clenched her fist in her himation until it was wrapped around her so tight that it was imprinting its weave pattern onto her skin. Just one ship, and the men she could see disembarking were too few to be fifty, and none turned to hare instantly up the hill towards her.
Penelope turned away to head into the palace, to wait for the bad news to find her.

The two sides warred, her brain a battlefield, as Mikasa floundered like a fish: "You're…you're…" she stuttered, eyes dashing about to look everywhere but right at Eren. Her reasonable side was starting to win out; she couldn't tell him her true feelings. Not now, maybe not ever. Her conclusion must have reflected on her face, because when she finally met his eyes in that moment, she saw something in the deep blue-green. At first, recognition, as if he could already see her answer as plainly as if it were written out across her forehead. But then, something else, something dark and distant and heartbreakingly sad:
She saw—if only for a moment—a reflection of the way she felt when she contemplated living out her life without Eren ever knowing the true depths of her love.
