    Summary

“Any challenge is a worthwhile endeavor,” Varka replies. “But if you’re worried about being fair or giving me a handicap…” Flins certainly hadn’t said that, but now he’s curious, and he grows more curious as Varka withdraws a scrap of fabric from one pocket. “Play blindfolded.”

The challenge whets Flins’s appetite. He isn’t the kind of fae who exults in games of chance but rather ones of wit and strategy, and he was fond of collecting intelligent men like glittering baubles at the Belyi Tsar’s court. “If I am to handicap myself, then I should receive a greater reward if I win, don’t you think?” he asks, the words out of his mouth before he can help them, for he, like all fae, loves a bargain.

When a bad storm strands Varka at Flins's lighthouse, the two play chess to pass the time. After beating Varka twice, Flins agrees to play with a blindfold, provided the loser owe the winner a boon.

    Summary

“Look at you,” Rerir murmured, his voice velvet over steel. “Empty. Starved. Too proud to admit it.” His grip adjusted, fingers sliding to Flins’ jaw, forcing his gaze upward. The red in his eyes burned hotter, crueler. “So I’ll admit it for you.”
Flins trembled, yellow eyes wide, fangs aching behind his lips. “Don’t—”
    “Feed.”
The word cracked like a whip. No room for refusal. No room for breath.
Flins’ throat bobbed. His hands shook as they rose—hesitant, trembling—as though touching something forbidden. His fingers brushed the edge of Rerir’s collar, the layered black bandages wound tight over his throat, symbols of sin and sovereignty. For a heartbeat, he froze.
    Then he pulled.
The fabric loosened under his fingers, baring pale flesh beneath. Veins like dark rivers ran close to the surface, the Abyssal energy raging within. The sight alone undid him.
    Flins’ fangs pierced skin.
    The first taste destroyed him.

Rerir reminds Flins who he belongs to.

    Summary

“Does it bother you?” Flins asks, voice low with concern.

Does it…bother Varka? Now that’s one hell of a question. If by ‘bothered’ Flins means that Varka is upset by the reminder of Flins’ ethereal otherness, his long-lived history, and all the difficulties their incompatible lifespans will surely bring upon them further down the line, then no, not in the slightest. It’s but a small price to pay for loving Flins, and Varka certainly wouldn’t want him to change anything about himself—not for Varka’s sake, nor anyone else’s.

But if by ‘bothered’ Flins is referring to Varka’s sudden newfound, all-consuming compulsion to hear him speak fae again—a rallying war cry in the midst of battle; whispers of sweet nothings in their quiet moments together; breathless gasps and moans, punctuated by screams of Varka’s name as Flins writhes in pleasure—then yes, Varka supposes it does bother him quite a bit.

Or, Varka wants Flins to speak fae to him in bed.
