It’s not a conscious decision; Bo’s not even sure that the words have come from her own mouth until all eyes in the square turn to her. Murmurs of disbelief ripple through the crowd and a cold, numb feeling settles in Bo’s stomach. What has she done?
Then the girl turns, wiping at the tears on her coal black cheeks. Her eyes seek out Bo’s, hope glowing red like hot coals, and whether Bo meant to speak up or not, there’s no going back now.
“I volunteer as tribute,” Bo repeats defiantly, her voice steady even if nothing else is.
The murmurs fade into silent shock.

Summary
A hundred years ago, Richard Rahl defeated the Keeper and saved the world, returning to Aydindril to marry the Mother Confessor and unite the three territories in peace--a peace not everyone wanted.
What followed was a magical war on a scale which had never before been seen--a war that left the land scarred and inhospitable to life. Wild magic tore across the territories, causing widespread panic, injury, mutation--and, for the lucky ones, death.
Those who managed to survive flocked to Aydindril, where the remaining wizards had formed a plan. Tapping into the stores of magic that had accumulated in the very earth around the Wizard's Keep, they erected a Boundary to keep out unwanted magic.
A century later, that Boundary has started to fail--forcing the Council to follow through with a plan to send a hundred young prisoners through the Boundary to discover if the land beyond is habitable.
