    The best things that ever happened to Lan Qiren were brought to him in the middle of the night by women with perms. First, his nephews, stricken with grief at the death of their parents, then Wei Ying, brought by a harried babysitter when his parents disappeared.

    There’s no time or space for grief or anything. He takes the children to buy black suits, he leaves them behind in the apartment, twelve-year-old A-Huan assuring him he’s old enough to be left alone with his brother, to go to their house and oversee it being packed up, the furniture sold, the personal effects of his brother and his wife put in storage.

     

    There’s no room for decisions or education. Only him sitting at his table with two children, eating in silence, only hearing A-Huan whispering to his brother in the middle of the night, only the three of them all tangled up together with grief and confusion and pain.

     

    And the certainty that he isn’t… that he won’t be a good parent.

    Lan Zhan doesn’t think about him anymore.

    The days when he would obsess over every tiny work Wei Ying appeared in are long gone. His days of buying every magazine he was in, of taping his interviews and watching them over and over again just to get a piece of the real him, they’re all over. Lan Zhan doesn’t follow every project Wei Ying is a part of anymore, doesn’t try to find out if Wei Ying ever mentioned him anywhere, and doesn’t keep the TV on just in case he hears Wei Ying’s voice in a new commercial.

    He has weeks, and even months, when Wei Ying doesn’t even cross his mind at all. And when he does, it is only with a faded kind of fondness, a simmering affection to the memories they shared together.

    He’s happy for the things Wei Ying achieved. There is almost no hurt at all, almost no pain. And almost must be just as good as none.

    It was there when his father took him to the park to play. Other kids had a father, just like him, but besides that person was another. It was usually a woman. They did the exact same thing a Baba would do. Kneel down when the kids scrapped their knees, kiss it better, smile and tell them to be careful.

    For some reason, the sight made A-Yuan’s heart squeeze.

    “A-Yuan has a Ma,” he would murmur during those times. “He’s just lost.”

    But the question kept swimming on the back of his head.
