Steve studied the photos arrayed in front of him, then looked up at Peggy. "What's the weapon?"
"A joke."
Steve stared at her as Bucky said, incredulously, "Are you seriously telling me a joke killed them?"
"It's been tested, Sergeant. It works. Mr Scribbler accidentally created a joke so funny that it kills people."
A killer joke. Steve wanted to bury his face in his hands and laugh. "Alright. You've developed a killer joke that can take out the Germans. What do you need me for?"
One of the British Commanders leaned forward. "The problem we're facing, Captain Rogers, is that it's a weapon almost too dangerous to use, since an ordinary man," he said meaningfully, "can only take one word."
And there it was. "You want me to learn the joke."

Summary
Ever since Steve could remember, he always wanted to do what was right. So orphaned young and alone, Hydra offered him a chance to be part of something more, to help free the world, to save it.
Steve took it without question.
Years later, he found himself at war with the Americans and the notorious Soldier, slowly coming to the realisation that things were not what they seemed to be at all. But time had never been kind – least of all to Steve – and it was way too late for regrets.
(Or the AU where Steve was Hydra but somehow ended up becoming a hero anyway, because some things were just inevitable)

Summary
Sharon Carter is a fugitive. She passes her time by tracking down SHIELD agents who still haven't been found after the infodump. One of those cases dredges up the past in unexpected and terrible ways. On top of that, Sharon uncovers a Hydra cell only to discover that they have a plan to either rule the world or destroy it in the attempt. Just in case that isn't difficult enough, the US government has figured out her connection to the fugitive Avengers, and someone has stolen her aunt's files - files that might hold the key to saving the world.
With something even larger on the way drawing away her potential resources, Sharon is forced to call on people she hasn't spoken to in years and rely on new allies to take on an ever-growing number of enemies drawn in by Hydra's message of hatred and power.
