Summary
In a heated duel at the height of a losing battle, Jaina casts a last-ditch portal. It's meant to send the Warchief to the center of Alliance command, where she can be subdued and put on trial for her crimes. Unfortunately the portal sends them to another plane entirely—where Jaina, stranded in unfamiliar wilderness and crippled by the magical backlash, finds herself dependent on the assistance of an experienced ranger.
Mutual need allows them to hammer out a truce, but even that can't keep them from falling back into old habits; once through the shock, neither of them wants to rely on the other, and they're both quite willing to lie, double cross, or otherwise manipulate the other to achieve their own ends. The tentative ceasefire seems doomed to failure, until contact with the residents of this strange new planet makes it horrifyingly clear exactly what kind of civilization they have stumbled upon.
Suddenly, everything has become simpler—and infinitely more complicated.

... Bonnibel hadn’t expected much this mission- maybe get to the Star again and have the slimmest chance to enact her revenge. It had been what had felt like centuries since she’d even gotten close to the Vampire King; and that was even before the Star had taken her eye. She felt like she’d been stumbling around in the dark ever since, never able to catch a break. She’d gained and lost so many friends over the years, all at the hands of the vampires. It had almost made her lose all hope when she’d been reduced down to her two current recruits.
But then she’d think of what had been taken from her by the vampires.
And that helped her find the will to keep fighting.
