Scott runs his fingers, unbroken and attached to his palm, along the cobblestone wall, sitting on his cot and glaring at the wall separating him from his friend, whose fingers likely did not share the same fate as Scott’s. “Well, you had an excellent shot to continue your streak of being a selfish prick, and you missed it quite spectacularly.”
“Not everyone longs for a pure death as much as you, Scott,” Gem’s voice was low, but not dangerous, though Scott figured that danger might be what she was going for. “Some of us would rather run.”

The Codfather’s loose shirt is gone now, and while Scott certainly hadn’t expected that level of muscle definition, that isn’t what he’s focused on. Jimmy’s torso is littered with scars. They’re all over, some large and others tiny, some an aged white and others a shiny red. He gapes at them, confused—what had happened? Is the sea really that dangerous? He knows Jimmy’s clumsy, does it justify this?
“What happened to you?” he blurts out, and Jimmy turns to him, face a picture of confusion, before his eyes follow Scott’s gaze. Comprehension dawns and his face closes off.
“You know how it is,” he says coolly, and Scott is pretty sure he does not, in fact, know how it is.

fWhip hadn't known what to expect when Jimmy had called him to say that Gem had been found in one of Mythland's dungeons. He'd excused himself from the meeting he was having with a handful of his advisors, and flew toward his former friend's empire.
Some part of him hoped it was some sort of cruel joke. He and the Codfather weren't exactly on good terms, but Jimmy wouldn't lie about something like this, right?
