It starts with bread.
But he doesn’t really understand it— didn’t, he thinks, want to understand it— until she’s standing in the doorway of his home-office two days later, wrapped in the duvet from his bed like it's a cocoon.
And he laughs at first, at the sleepy, pouty-lipped little shape of her as she shuffles over to him and climbs into his lap and grumbles until he wraps her up into his arms.
“I was working,” he chides softly, but when he ducks his head to press his mouth to her forehead, her skin is flushed and sticky with heat.
And it’s there, he finds it, understands it— can’t ignore it— a sickly-sweet smell just under the familiar smell of his baby. That cloying, clinging scent that lingers in the heat he chases along her cheek, something hot and syrupy, made more of a feeling than a real scent. (A pooling thing, like a slow drip along his spine, a slow drip in his stomach, something molten, sugared, full of need and hunger.)

She looked completely uninterested, detached, like she had nothing left to give. A ghost, almost. I took another drag from my own cigarette, my eyes never leaving her. She looked like a temptress of death, the darkness emanating from her would put Persephone to shame. For a second, I thought I was imagining her. Was she even real? So incredibly stunning yet almost devoid of life.
Her eyes remained on the cigarette, consumed by it, as if nothing else mattered. I studied her features again, her flawless skin, the subtle moles on her face that only made her look more unreal. My dick twitched with interest when she let out the smoke from her lips, who is this woman?
She didn't speak to me again, I had hoped she would. I was in a trance, completely distracted by this being. She finished her cigarette, dropped the butt and simply stepped on it. She didn't look back, and then I watched as she went through the same door I had come out of, I was almost convinced she had been a vision, a fever dream. I checked my temperature with the back of my hand. No, she was real. I hurried to finish my cigarette and tossed it away, I walked inside, trying to find her. But it was a corporate building, she could’ve gone anywhere.
