Summary
Then:
“What do you tell all these girls to get them to go out with you?” Steve asked as he dropped his cigarette and ground it under his heel.
Billy’s grin was sharp and easy. “Meet me behind the mall,” he said, and for a second, Steve thought that Billy was saying it to him.
Now:
“And you miss him,” Dustin added, his voice sounding even farther away. Steve kept his eyes closed and listened to Dustin sigh.“No I don’t,” Steve said. “I don’t miss him. I’m fine.”
(Then: March, April, May, and June, Steve and Billy meet behind the mall. Now: summer, fall, winter, and spring after the mall. Steve grapples with what he's lost and what comes back).

Summary
It’s a rock that does it, finally. Billy’s toe catches on a rock as they’re running, and they’ve been running for what feels like hours and he isn’t tired at all, feels like he could run all night, might have to, but his toe catches on a rock and Billy goes down on all fours with a howl and he just–he just can’t get back up.

Summary
Billy’s sitting in the last cell, jammed up against bars and wall. When he hears the door open, he jumps to his feet, pushes hair out of his face, bares his teeth and–
“Oh,” he says, when he sees them. His voice is so carefully blank. Steve shuts his eyes for a second.
“You have ten minutes,” Hopper warns. “Then I want him gone.” Steve opens his eyes, nods.
“Yes, sir,” Billy says, snapping a salute behind the bars.

Summary
“Happy last day, everyone,” Aaron adds. His grin turns a little dirty then. “Hargrove, hey man. I bet you’re thrilled for a little more free time.”
Steve perks up, turning to see where Billy is, ready to ask him what his problem was this morning, but he freezes when he sees the look on Billy’s face.
