Ray's voice breaking as he begs Pete to get back up is impossible to resist, even if it’s to save his life. Ray isn’t ready for it all to be over yet. That’s okay, Pete can walk with him just a little further.
He’s smiling to himself, shaking his head at Ray’s stubborn kindness, shoulder tingling with the phantom sensation of Ray squeezing it, when the two shots ring out behind him, echoing off the wet pavement.
