It’s like...they have something like this too, right?” She gestures outward impatiently, and Bruce forces himself not to flinch at her casual use of they. “Only they have words written down instead.”
“Soulmates,” Clark says, his voice strained.
The word hits Bruce like a bullet through the lung. He keeps his face perfectly relaxed, his heartbeat calm and regular, as he realizes (too late, he's always too late) that he should have expected this all along.

Summary
It's the first winter after Pitch's defeat. Jack is happy, he's not alone anymore, and his memories are gradually returning. But when a treasure hunt gone wrong puts Jack and Jamie in danger, flinging them through time and space, they find themselves on an island neither of them have heard of before. Jack's first priority is to get Jamie home safe, but Berk's inhabitants - human and otherwise - are certainly not making it easy.
Knowing they will leave Berk and the Vikings behind as soon as they know how to, Jack is not going to risk the pain of growing close to any of these people (or dragons, for that matter). But Hiccup Horrendous Haddock, wearing his heart on his sleeve, doesn't seem to want to take the hint.

Silence, one that he can practically feel on the hair of his skin. It’s as dull, sudden, and crushing as it was when it first appeared—on a day that he swears he woke with a smile. Anticipation crawls through, laying its sharp claws on each and every vessel of what is now a hollow shell of a bleak organ, rotting underneath his ribs.
Silence, one that persists for a few impromptu beats. Thud. Thud. Thud.
“Damn,” Jack says. He points at Hiccup’s fries. “Are you gonna eat that?”
