Among Garreg Mach University's many long-lived traditions was the Mage's Ball - an exclusive dance, hosted by students certified in a magic class.
Extravagant decorations, fancy outfits, swaying to the music - to say nothing if the tradition where students asked their guests in dramatic, romantic ways.
Ferdinand adored it.
Hubert avoided it.
Their final year. Hubert and Ferdinand were friends. Ferdinand had no date. And Hubert realized he might perhaps maybe somewhat enjoy it - possibly - if he attended with Ferdinand.

Summary
Hubert is… Well. Ferdinand is pretty sure that his gut instinct is correct: There’s something off about the man. He never leaves the house, save to take the trash out—which there is a concerning amount of. And there’s that burning smell, the one that makes his nose sting and eyes water. Ferdinand hasn’t seen any fires in his backyard, even when peeking over the fence, so he knows that Hubert isn’t burning trash to the best of his knowledge.
But Ferdinand has also determined that the smell comes from the basement, stinking up the entire cul-de-sac as it wafts through the air. Maybe it’s the city councilman in him, or maybe it’s the HOA responsibility, but Ferdinand has found himself stalking the perimeter of Hubert’s house, determined to figure it out.
Ferdinand falls in love with his new neighbor who is certainly, most definitely, a murderer of some sort. Written for Almost Sentimental, a Ferdibert AU zine.
