    “No!”

For a man of his stature, Wriothesley crosses the room at impressive speed. One hand clamps around Neuvillette's wrist, and the other snatches the note away just before it can fall to its burning demise. There's nowhere for Neuvillette to retreat— not unless he wants to take the note's spot in the fireplace— so he just braces himself on his feet as he parses Wriothesley's irate expression.

“What the hell are you doing?” Wriothesley demands as he straightens. “That's evidence.” He holds the note up and away, as if he's expecting Neuvillette to grab at it like a child whose toy has been confiscated.

“Evidence of what?” Neuvillette asks, astonished by the display of fervor from a man known for turning polite nonchalance into an art form. “It's not a crime to send a letter.”

“Letter?” Wriothesley growls. “I think you mean threat.”

Neuvillette receives a threatening letter, and Wriothesley makes some threats of his own.

    Summary

Dahlia long ago lost track of how many refills they’ve downed between them, but Venti has clearly reached his limit. He has an obvious tell: when he's drunk, he wobbles back and forth, at constant threat of sloshing wine down the front of his clothes.

Ha! Silly bard. Dahlia pats his palms against the table and hums an off-tune hymn as he basks in his victory.

“Don't look so shmug,” Venti says with a light slurring of his words and an accusatory, off-center point of his finger. “You're jusht as drunk as I am.”

What? No, that's not true. Dahlia opens his mouth to parry with a witty retort, but for some reason all that comes out is, “Pbbt, m’not.”

Venti's answering laugh is as sweet and smooth as honeyed mead. Dahlia watches the curving of that wine-anointed mouth with keen interest, wondering if Venti's mirth tastes as good as it sounds.

    Oh. That's a dangerous thought.

Maybe Dahlia is a bit drunk.

A drinking game leads to two unexpected confessions.

    Summary

“Oh,” Dahlia squeaks through drawn lips. “Oh, this… we shouldn't be doing this. This is blasphemy of the highest order.”

The vibrations of a muted giggle make his already weakened legs tremble in threat of complete collapse. Turquoise eyes full of dangerous mischief flash up to hold his gaze. The color skews a shade darker than usual as it filters through long, elegant lashes.

“Venti,” Dahlia whines. “They will find us.”

    Summary

Wriothesley's guts constricted, stomach bottoming out in a heated clench that punched his diaphragm down and turned his inhale into a pained gasp. Warmth flooded unbidden across the surface of his skin, ruddying his cheeks with blood.

Dear fucking gods. What was that scent?

It registered like a spice to his nose— rich, pungent, and potent enough to edge a sneeze. But unlike any spice he'd ever encountered, this scent carried its own connotation that his instincts recognized immediately.

This room smelled like power. It hung suspended in the air like a dense haze of fog. Pure and unadulterated. True and undeniable.

It made him want to kneel.

It made him want to crawl.

Wriothesley has spent so many years on suppressants that he's forgotten what it means to be an omega. That is, until he meets the one alpha whose scent is impossible to ignore.

    Summary

“I have heard,” Neuvillette says, each word cautiously ambling off his tongue, “of a game that humans play. A modification to the rules that might entice you to stay a while longer.”

Wriothesley waits, still wearing that smarmy grin, no doubt expecting Neuvillette to propose some obscure and complicated variant of chess.

“The game is typically played with cards,” Neuvillette continues, “but I believe it will work just as effectively as a motivator in this scenario. For each game you win, I shall remove one article of clothing.”

The way the grin slides straight off Wriothesley's face is immensely satisfying, as is the movement of his scarred throat as it violently bobs. “You will— sorry, what?”

During a friendly game of chess, Neuvillette gets his draconic wires crossed.

    Summary

“There is no great change without great sacrifice,” Capitano says slowly, his thoughts slipping into the past, as they often do. Not all change is positive, but unlike Khaenri'ah, Natlan will have the chance to heal from its wounds. “As leaders, it's our responsibility to choose the path our people will travel, but we cannot carry every soul to its end. No one possesses such strength. Not even a god.”

Mavuika looks up at him with uncharacteristic fragility in her bright eyes. “Did I pick the right path, then?”

He turns, deliberately, so that she'll know he's looking back. “Yes.”

    Summary

“Your plan is doomed to fail,” Capitano tells her. “By trying to save everyone, you will save no one. I suggest reconsidering your position before your nation burns to the ground, solnyshko.” That last word, spoken in an unfamiliar language, rolls smoothly off his tongue.

The soldiers behind him don't even try to stifle their disrespectful laughter.

Mavuika narrows her eyes. “Oh, are we name calling now, Captain?” She spits his title at him with haughty venom. “That's awfully mature. What does it mean? Witch? Bitch? Or are you feeling more creative than that today?”

Or, the five times Capitano addresses her in Snezhnayan, and the one time she understands what he's trying to say.

    Summary

The first time Wriothesley visited the Court of Fontaine Public Library, it was to check out a book. He was pretty proud of himself for that, actually. Just a normal, well-adjusted citizen putting his tax dollars to good use.

The second, third, fourth, and fifth time he visited the Court of Fontaine Public Library, it was not to check out a book, but a person.

This made him feel significantly less well-adjusted, and yet he still came back day after day and pretended to peruse the shelf behind the front desk.

A beautiful librarian catches Wriothesley's eye. If only the man were as easy to read as his books.

    Summary

"What has happened?" Neuvillette asked, voice calm and carefully modulated.

"Chief Justice… the Fortress of Meropide has fallen."

There came a flash of white light, bright enough to blind even through the windows of his office. The crack of violent thunder that followed rattled the entire building as torrential rain began to drench Fontaine in the dragon's tears.

When the Hydro Dragon is sad, it rains. When the Hydro Dragon is angry, it storms.

    Summary

Nothing about Kaveh was logical. Everything about the blonde's mannerisms, from his devil-may-care attitude to his lackadaisical approach to his studies, resulted in nothing but heartache for the poor, easily-tricked bastard.

This walking disaster of a man drove Alhaitham mad, and he had no qualms about explaining this fact to Kaveh.
