It's to be expected, of course; they've had many close calls over the years. It just so happens that he's the first to be pinned down.
Thoma may be the "fixer" in these parts, but he never did manage to reach the heights of Ayato's charisma and network building. It was bound to catch up with him one day. Important players had enough of his meddling in affairs, finally wanting to be done with him and deal a blow to the clan in one fell swoop. It was a smart ploy too!
Too bad he's really not in the mood to appreciate it.

Summary
There's an intense look of concentration on that perfect face, and it has Hua Cheng nervous all over again. Xie Lian has managed thus far to ruin him with barely any effort and notice, and while he wants nothing more than to absorb all of his attention, he also isn't sure he'd survive the ordeal.
Then again, maybe that would be an excellent way to go…Hua Cheng is already missing one eye; what's the loss of another to such perfect, blinding sunlight?

The ground shifts, and The Balladeer's gaze snaps from the sky to meet his own eyes, finally. Although maybe not so good, as his head seemed to physically wobble at the whiplash. The hat he is so viscerally fond of, even if he denies it, sits abandoned at his feet.
His eyes are narrowed, but he too relaxes against his throne, a facsimile of confidence only betrayed by the fact that Tartaglia knows what this all means to him.
Maybe not all of it (it's clear the Traveler had some better sources in that regard) but just enough.
It's so dull knowing everything about a person anyway.
