If you must fix something, you must start at the root of the problem. Except they already tried that and the Root was not very receptive to the idea. So... start before the problem even existed??
Except Team Ro didn't plan to come back to the past. They didn't have any concrete idea of what to fix. Most of them don't even think they have the jurisdiction to make such changes.

Summary
Unexpected things happen on missions. A team member drops the precious cargo, your charge has bounty hunters after them, a missing-ninja shows up. Of course with Team 7 normal unexpected complications can never be simple. Getting trapped in the Warring States Era being one of them. Now all they have to do is find a way back home without somehow inadvertently causing the Leaf to no longer be created.

Summary
It was Naruto and Sasuke's fault really. The two should not be mixed because they always land the team in different situations that no other normal people find themselves in.
They always leave a mess and with Kakashi as their teacher, he's left to face the consequences of their actions.
Now, he was in the past and he has to face the things he had already gone through once again. His plans of changing the future however, are derailed with his instincts taking ahold of him and making him commit treason, kidnapping his students and running away from Konoha.
Or
Kakashi Time travels to the past back to his 15 years old body, goes a little bit of feral and becomes a missing nin.
Insanity ensues.
