    Summary

87 years after the Fall, a baby was born on the planet of Gunsmoke.

This in itself was hardly a revelation; the incontrovertible human need to reproduce had not been dampened by the desert sands the survivors had found themselves stranded in. Yet as Knives watched the newborn writhe beneath him, he couldn't help but wonder how the whole planet hadn't already erupted into jubilation at this divine birth. He reached out a finger far more tentatively than any other gesture he'd made in nearly a century to brush the infant's cheek, watching in unconcealed awe at the geometric patterns that radiated from the place their skin touched, organic blue lights glowing faintly in the sea of red surrounding them.

    Summary

At night, Vash allowed himself to be coaxed into the comfort of Wolfwood’s embrace, head tucked securely against the steady drum of his pulse, and they would both pretend not to have noticed how his eyes glowed orange moments before, his glasses still buried deep in his coat’s pocket.
    He hid, until he couldn’t.

    Summary

Pancakes were easy to make. Pancakes were an old favorite, something that was just similar enough in ingredient list (flour; sugar; eggs; milk) to donuts that it was Vash’s God-given right to learn how to make ‘em. No leavening agent made them a faster throw-together dessert, but that didn’t mean they didn’t require patience and a skilled hand. One could easily fuck up pancakes as easily as one could, say, blow a giant hole in the moon. He’d made many-a burnt circle of ash in his time as a sometimes-useless baker and most of those weren’t even his fault. You try making a perfect pancake while in an active shootout. You try attending to that sensitive little bubble of dough while dodging your own customers rallying for your head on a sixty-billion double-dollar pike. Vash might’ve been a free man, now, but he was not taking any chances with something being made for someone as special as Milly Thompson.

    Summary

The first person who’d started the trend was actually Miss Luida herself. When Meryl and Milly were interviewing her about the ongoing Noman recovery efforts, the topic of the Humanoid Typhoon had come up—and as smoothly as any other slimy, skilled politician constantly bathing in the public’s critical eye, Luida had hummed thoughtfully to herself, before lying straight through her teeth.

“Oh, Vash the Stampede?” Luida had said, never missing a beat. “Ahh. Yes. After everything, I heard he went bald from the stress. When do you suppose they’ll update his bounty poster?”

—And then she’d winked when Milly’s giggles made the camera move off of her face, and Meryl had smiled like she’d just found a nugget of pure gold in a pile of tomas shit.

    Summary

The blankets are stripped, the pillows stacked neatly on one of the chairs by the window, presumably because of the heat. That’s not what catches Meryl’s attention; rather, it’s Vash, or who Meryl assumes to be Vash, writhing on the floor by the bed, tangled up in the thin bedsheet he must’ve been using as a blanket.

And—with white feathers flying everywhere. Vash’s wings have sprouted, from his back, off his arms, all over his face. Fluttering and clapping over his eyes, wrestling towards the ceiling like they’ll free him from the blanket-prison he created by thrashing. Even now, Meryl’s mind begins to whir with action items—get Vash out of there, toss the sheet aside, calm him down—but the rest of her has frozen. The one breath she manages stops in her throat, makes a sort of rattling sound on its way out. Her chest tightens until she can feel every line of her ribcage against her rapidly beating heart.

It’s been a long time since Meryl has seen Vash’s wings. Even after he killed Legato Bluesummers—he—

    Vash’s hand—the prosthetic—hits the ground with a heavy thunk.

    ---

A nightmare brings out Vash's feathers, which Meryl hasn't seen since Dragon's Nest.
