“That was the night I knew,” he said, just a little above a whisper. He moved his right hand from the countertop to rest on your cheek, compelling you to meet his eyes again. You furrowed your brow and cocked your head in question.
“Knew what?” You asked.
“That I was a goner; that I was completely crazy about you,” he replied, running his thumb over your cheekbone.
You swallowed hard and were vaguely aware that your heartbeat picked up and you had to remind yourself to breathe… was he saying what you thought he was saying?

You and Bucky finally find your way to each other. But nothing is ever so simple for heroes like the Avengers.
This is an alternate universe story where the events of Civil War didn't end in splitting the Avengers but brought everyone together. It takes place before, during, and after Infinity War and Endgame, with those events being slightly altered as well, in keeping the alternate universe, branched timeline, alternate reality, or whatever you choose to call it, concept.

Bucky Barnes is steadily wiping Hydra off the face of the planet. Except someone is beating him to it, leaving nothing but empty bases and wiped computers. Then the messages begin: locations for bases the Avengers haven't found yet.
Every base is the same--the computers are wiped, and the remaining Hydra goons are ready for a fight. While Bucky is happy to have somewhere to put his frustration, he can't help but wonder who's behind the messages. They're always one step ahead, leaving no clues about who they are or why they're so bent on the destruction of Hydra's computer network; until one day, when Bucky and his team follow the latest tip and find a woman fighting off an absurd number of Hydra agents. These are the words inscribed on Bucky's wedding ring. A wedding ring that he doesn't remember ever having. It's not a vow he made-- not that he remembers, anyway-- but it might just be one that he decides to keep anyway.
Excerpt:
I feel my lover’s hand brush the hair from my face. My eyes are not yet open, but I can feel her gaze, her breath, even her smile behind the darkness of my closed eyelids. The mattress dips with her heated weight next to me, a familiar feeling that warms me from the inside out.
“Sergeant Barnes,” she lilts softly, her smile dancing in the sound of her words. “It’s time for breakfast. If you’d like to be up sometime before noon, now’s your chance.”
There’s only one thing that bothers me.
It shouldn’t be morning. It should be afternoon at the earliest. Last I remember, I was fighting— what’s new? I’m always fighting— and it was important this time. It was a fight for not only our lives but every life, an earth-shattering, world-ending battle for the future of humanity. I should be there fighting still.
And besides, I have no lover. I don’t even know what gave me the idea that I did.

Growing up in a city ruled by mobsters, you were made to memorize certain rules.
It didn't matter that your father owned the bakery built on the neutral ground, you still had to be careful, especially as a civilian. Never interrupting customers when they were in the middle of a conversation was one of those rules, ignoring the gunshots coming from different parts of the city was another but the most important rule was; you weren’t supposed to be friends with the children of mobsters.
“But I’m not like my father,” Bucky had told you once, making you scoff.
"You will be.”
You were wrong, though. His father was just one of the many mob bosses in the city.
Bucky Barnes on the other hand, was going to be a legend.
