    Excerpt:

Then, there’s a single silver butterfly that lands in front of him and Xie Lian reaches out to it. Delicately, it lands on his palm and Xie Lian loves it so much that his heart swells and his eyes sting, his smile is shaky and full of adoration. He holds it close to him like he’s holding something precious, and truthfully he is. It’s a part of Hua Cheng and he loves this as much as he loves Hua Cheng.

When the silence starts to stretch out, he realizes that the other spirits have left. The butterfly leaves and he watches it with a sense of loss. However, he isn’t alone for much longer as the sound of familiar jingles fill the room with each soft step.

Xie Lian stiffens, breath catching in his throat and heart beating a mile a minute. He doesn’t dare turn around for he’s not confident that he wouldn’t jump right into Hua Cheng’s arms. There’s also another part of him that doesn’t want to turn around out of fear that this version will disappear as well.

As the footsteps stop beside him, he realizes one vital thing. He has no plan. Rouye is trembling with excitement and Xie Lian soothes him to calm himself down as well.

At last, he casts his gaze over to Hua Cheng and his husband is standing there in delicate crimson robes adorned with silver jewelry and his expression is indescribable.

It’s not his husband, Xie Lian realizes although he really should’ve known. It hurts, but the pain is temporary as the joy of simply seeing him again overtakes everything else.

His form is most similar to that of when they first met, a young man riding in the back of a cart relaxing against a bed of hay. His dark eyes rest on him, a bit wide in disbelief and mouth parted just a tad as though the words are caught in his throat. Hua Cheng is just as ethereal as the last time Xie Lian saw him.

Like two pieces of a shared soul, they rejoin at last.

“Marry me.” Is what Xie Lian wants to say, but what he says instead is, “Hello.” If the word comes out breather than intended, then it’s not on purpose.

It takes a second for Hua Cheng to shake himself out of whatever trance he’s held in and the corner of his lips curl up. It’s one of the sweetest smiles that Xie Lian’s seen, brimming with well hidden bewilderment.

“Daozhang, what brings you to Ghost City?”

Xie Lian smiles back and revels in the smoothness of his voice. Should Hua Cheng sing him a low melody, Xie Lian would willingly follow him to ruin. There’s no one else that Xie Lian would rather have. However, there’s a part of him that feels cold with the realization that Hua Cheng doesn’t know him as his husband, but remembers only the white-calamity version of him. That buried hope that his husband was here as well dies and with it, whatever peace he’s thought he’s made with it.

“A friend brought me here originally, but this temple caught my attention.”

Hua Cheng seems a little caught on the ‘friend’ part of his sentence, but it’s overtaken with an abashed look as he glances away. “Do you like it?”

Xie Lian can’t help the smile from getting wider on his face. “I love it. Everything is breathtaking and so intricately made down to the smallest details.”

They stand to admire it for a while longer before Hua Cheng says, “I’m sure that the ruler of this city would be most pleased to hear such high praise.”

So this was the game they would play? Xie Lian tries not to smile, but Hua Cheng makes it difficult not to. “Crimson Rain Sought Flower built this temple? For whom?”

There’s a hint of pink on Hua Cheng’s ears and his eyes are a bit wide. “He did and only he knows who this temple is dedicated to. Does Daozhang know of this city’s ruler?”

“I’ve heard many stories about him.” Xie Lian says. “I’ve come to enjoy them very much. Looking at this temple, I’ve come to a realization that Crimson Rain Sought Flower must be a very talented, powerful, and lovely individual.” When Hua Cheng looks a bit overwhelmed, Xie Lian lessens up. “Pardon me, I don’t believe we’ve introduced ourselves.”

Clearing his throat, Hua Cheng turns to face him completely. His eyes run over his form quickly and Xie Lian wonders if maybe he should have dressed up a little better for this or washed his hair before now. “I am the third in the family, perhaps you could call me ‘San Lang’?”

With a sigh of relief, Xie Lian nods eagerly. “Perfect! I go by Hua Xie, but perhaps it’d be more fitting to call me ‘Gege’?”

The tips of Hua Cheng’s ears go completely red and the sight of it fills Xie Lian with an almost inappropriate amount of glee. Is this why Hua Cheng loves to tease him so much? He could see the appeal now.

    Excerpt:

Hua Cheng turned towards his companion just as a gust of wind blew, the veil lifting up just enough for Hua Cheng to catch a pale face and lips tilted up with a smile. He couldn’t control himself as he lifted the veil, revealing The Most Beautiful Man he had ever seen. Made up lightly, his features were soft and delicate. His lips colored a deep red, turned up into a wide smile, sharp cheekbones, and pale, perfect skin…

His golden eyes were lined with red, and the sight took Hua Cheng’s breath away.

It was just like the moment he first heard the man’s voice. There was a rattling in Hua Cheng’s brain. For a brief moment the image was superimposed with a man in white. One who was wearing a mask –

Hua Cheng’s body started to shake, not from terror or anger, but because he didn’t know what he wanted to do. Seeing the man made him vibrate in his skin. He wanted to grab onto the other man and not let him go. He wanted to kiss the man’s face and whisper words of praise.

    He wanted to kneel.

Hua Cheng swallowed and licked his dry lips. It did not escape him how this beautiful man watched the movement with slightly parted lips and hooded eyes.

“Do…” Hua Cheng coughed, and the man grinned at him, those golden eyes crinkling in delight. “Do I know you…?”

Hua Cheng knew it was the wrong thing to say immediately because the man’s face cracked. The wide smile and hooded golden eyes morphed into a look that was almost akin to terror, for a second.

    Only for a second.

And then the man was back to smiling, but not as bright as the initial one. Like clouds have decided to cover the summer sun. Hua Cheng wanted to hit himself for dimming that smile.

“Is this esteemed daozhang so careless?” The man took a step forward, so that their chests were pressed together, the lines of their bodies so close that Hua Cheng was certain that if anyone were to see them, they wouldn’t be able to tell where one ended and one began. “If I am a stranger, why does he seem so hesitant to step away?”

Hua Cheng felt his head dip down, as if wanting to be even closer to the beautiful man. Why is he being like this? He is usually so reserved, he gets grossed out by the touch of any other being. Why does he crave closeness with this particular person?

Why does his mind rattle? Who is the figure of white he keeps seeing? Why can’t he step away?

Hua Cheng observed how his silver butterflies looked at home amongst the spider lilies, how even E-ming showed no aggression towards the white silk or the crimson sword, calmer than Hua Cheng had ever seen from his blade post-battle.

For the first time since his ascension, despite all his confusion, he felt settled in his skin.

The man tipped his head up, and they were so close that Hua Cheng could feel the small puffs of breath from the smaller man. He could see flecks of red in the man’s golden eyes.

“Unless this handsome daozhang is like this with everyone.” The man pouted and sighed dramatically, before taking one step back.

Hua Cheng’s body reacted faster than his mind. He stepped forward to maintain that closeness, one arm wrapping around the man’s waist to keep him from moving away.

Was this some sort of curse? A ghostly hold?

    Was he going mad?

And yet, Hua Cheng couldn’t help but feel…

Like he was always meant to be here.

“Daozhang~” The man purred, resting his hands on Hua Cheng’s chest. “So forward!”

“I apologize I –” Hua Cheng watched the man lick his lips, and he found himself following the motion, before catching himself. “I –”

“Hmmmm?” The man dragged a finger up Hua Cheng’s chest, to his neck, up to his chin. The god’s knees shook from the effort to stay still.

    “I don’t know what I’m doing…” Hua Cheng whispered.

The man grinned. “Perhaps daozhang’s body knows something that daozhang doesn’t~”

    “You –”

    “RRAAAAAAGGGHHHH!!!!”

    Pure instinct.

At the sound, Hua Cheng immediately stepped in front of the man, weapons at the ready, putting himself between the danger and his –

    His –

    His…?

Hands snaked from behind him, wrapping around his waist, but his instincts seem to have double standards as his body refused to do anything against the man who hugged him from behind, resting his chin on Hua Cheng’s shoulder.

“Don’t worry, daozhang.” He whispered in Hua Cheng’s ear. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”

    Excerpt:

Explanation not forthcoming, Xie Lian asked, “How can this one help you, Waning Moon Officer?”

“What did you do?” Yin Yu asked, and Yin Yu it was. Gone was the generally polite tone and posture of the Waning Moon Officer, leaving only a visibly anxious man behind.

    “Do?”

“I hadn’t ever seen Hua Cheng that…distressed before,” Yin Yu said. “He wouldn’t speak with me when he returned from the festival and then he left for somewhere and he’s blocking all communications. I know he was with you on Zhongyuan, so I need to know; what did you do?”

Xie Lian felt a little indignant about the whole thing. Yin Yu knew nothing of that night, anything could have happened in the chaos of the festival. Sure, he was right, and Xie Lian felt immensely guilty for causing Hua Cheng’s distress, but it was also none of Yin Yu’s business. “How do you know something else didn’t happen, separate from myself?”

“Please, I am not blind,” Yin Yu said flatly.

Xie Lian sighed and relented. “We fought.”

Yin Yu blinked back at him, brows furrowing. “You…fought.”

“Yes. We had a rather intense misunderstanding. It seems he wants nothing to do with me now, so I was letting that happen.” That was a fairly close summary of things without airing all sorts of private information. “I made a mistake. I was going to come by soon to try to speak with him, but I hadn’t quite made it yet.”

Yin Yu began pacing the room again, his right hand massaging his temple in frustration. He appeared to be muttering to himself, though it was too low and quick to catch any of the words.

He stopped walking, rounding on Xie Lian. “Take off the mask, Your Highness.”

    Xie Lian froze.

Where had he gone wrong then for Yin Yu to have been able to work out who he was?

Xie Lian reluctantly removed his mask, placing his rabbit beside Yin Yu’s smiling mask on the desk. They met each other’s eyes, unfettered by anything between them.

Yin Yu’s mouth fell open, then, “Fuck.”

Ah. That had been a trick then—a gamble that had paid off. Xie Lian silently cursed himself.

“Does Hua Cheng know then?” Xie Lian asked as Ruoye shifted anxiously beneath his robes.

“If I knew what was going on in his head—” Yin Yu cut himself off and shook his head, still staring disbelievingly at Xie Lian. “I don’t know what he thinks.”

It seemed a futile question, but he had to try. “Could you please not tell him?”

“I cannot,” Yin Yu replied, at least meeting his eyes as he said it, expression complicated—torn between honesty, that he could not defy his master, and regret of the same, and…something unplaceable. Yin Yu sighed, rubbing his hand over his face again. “I can’t tell Hua Cheng right away though,” he admitted. “I can’t find him and he won’t let me into his communication array, so I can’t tell him anything.” His voice rose in frustration.

    “I’m sorry.”

Yin Yu waved a dismissive hand in his direction. Xie Lian did not take it personally, it seemed this whole situation had rather gotten out of everyone’s control. “You have time, anyway, to decide what you want to do,” Yin Yu said. “He won’t know until I can speak to him. It’s…all I can do.”

Xie Lian nodded, it did give him time. He didn’t think his decision would change but it was something. “How long have you worked with Hua Cheng for?”

Yin Yu sat down then, appearing much more tired than he had a few moments before. “Nearly forty years now.”

“That’s quite a while. Do you like working for him?” Xie Lian asked.

    “Yes. Do you?”

He smiled and nodded. “Mn, I do like it here.”

Yin Yu returned it, crossing his arms. “It’s better here than the heavenly realm in some ways. Here they say what is meant to your face.”

    ...

“You seem to know Hua Chengzhu well and have worked with him for far longer than I have. Do you think it is worth me staying, or would it be best for everyone if I left?” Xie Lian posited candidly. His throat ached to even ask it, but the Waning Moon Officer might be his best option of an impartial opinion. He’d never been particularly friendly to Xie Lian, but had always seemed to act in Hua Cheng’s best interests, even when the ghost himself was displeased by whatever it was his servant was saying.

Yin Yu inclined his head, accepting his words. He fixed the smiling mask to his face. A beat of silence held as he considered the question. “Do you plan to hurt him?”

Xie Lian pressed his lips together, his attention falling to the floor, unable to hide the stricken emotion from his face. “No. I don’t want to, and I never meant to, regardless of…what has happened.”

A long breath left the Waning Moon Officer.

“Then I think you should stay.”
