“Luffy,” Ace mumbles sleepily, “Get off of me.”
Normally, Luffy just starts whining and complaining and ends up asking for food, and normally Ace puts up a fight for approximately a minute before giving in. Sabo gleefully points out every time the time goes down; Ace flips him off every time.
Now, though, Luffy’s just burying his face deeper into Ace’s shoulder. “Ace,” Luffy whimpers, and Ace is instantly on high alert.

(Or: Ace wakes up twice to his brothers clinging to him like koalas, and is incredibly confused. It takes him a while to get with the program.)

Luffy with his crew is somewhere between a force of nature and an act of God - so determined it feels like fate itself has submitted to his whims. So it is a really good thing the Strawhat Pirates would never let their captain go to war by himself, isn’t it? They'll need to pull off a few miracles to get Ace out of Marineford alive, after all.

He doesn’t have enough time. He’s going to lose another brother, only this time it’s going to happen right in front of his eyes, from seven—five—three feet away.
He’s ten years old again and learning what grief is. He’s ten years old and all that’s left of Sabo is the letter in his hand and a shared dream and the promise that Ace will look after their silly baby brother while he’s gone.
“DON’T TOUCH HIM!” Ace screams. It’s pure desperation. It’s the last human thing he’ll ever say if Luffy dies here.
