He awoke with a gasp, shooting straight up in his bed. It was not unlike the sensation of falling down while asleep and jolting awake. But this was much, much worse. He sat there, a sob caught in his throat, shaking violently, pressing the balls of his wrists into his eyes.
The images from Vincent’s nightmare still flashed behind his eyes so clearly as though it were real. The ear splitting blast from the explosion, the shrapnel from the car bomb ricocheting in every direction and piercing his flesh. The dream was as realistic as the day it had actually happened in Kabul, but the only thing that had changed from the reality of that day was the figure bleeding out next to him in this nightmare.
