The car is filled with a stilted silence, only broken by Ellie’s deep breaths coming from the back seat. You shift softly in the front seat, eyes cast out the window, bruised hands fidgeting in your lap. You break the silence first.
“What are we going to tell her?” You ask Joel, not turning to face him. He doesn’t answer for a moment, taking in your words.
“That they stopped looking for a cure, the tests didn’t lead anywhere.” He finally says, eyes locked on the road, his hands tightening on the wheel, “We’ll say that raiders attacked, it’ll explain your injuries.”
“Ok,” you answer quietly. Silence fills the car again, this time more comfortable, more breathable.
“We did the right thing,” Joel says, this time turning to look at you.
“I know we did,” you reply, meeting his eyes.
