Casey does their best to laugh. The sound is strained— it matches April’s smile.
“Where can I sit?” April asks, somehow appearing next to them. Casey lurches into a fighting stance on impulse, hand darting for the kunai they kept at their hip. In an instant, April backs away, hands up and open.
Nonthreatening.
Casey both appreciates and loathes the gesture.
They tamp the adrenaline in their body down, forcing themselves to stand up straight. April watches them. The oxygen burns in their lungs, begging Casey to say something, anything.
As if she felt the weight of Cassandra’s gaze, April looks up. Her doe-brown eyes rimmed with red glasses say something unreadable.
Casey looks away.
