Summary
On instinct, Hero moves, leaving the door wide open behind him. His knees hit the floor hard and he skids a few feet before he reaches Mari, hands already coming down to cradle her sides, gathering her limp body in his arms. Dimly, Hero registers the muffled sounds of Sunny, calling Mari’s name and starting down the stairs, but for one moment only, Hero doesn’t register him. He registers only Mari, her torso folding in half in the wrong direction when he lifts her off the violin, her head lolling to the side on his shoulder. She’s not breathing.
“Mari,” Sunny says again, much closer now. Hero snaps out of his trance, feeling his heart start beating again all at once. Mari’s doesn’t. Though Hero’s head swivels in Sunny’s direction, Mari doesn’t react at all. Sunny is standing a few steps away, hand ghosting the railing, his face pale and his lower lip trembling.
He’s on the verge of tears. For a second, Hero considers admonishing him. The thought is dismissed out of hand. This is not Sunny’s fault.
