Summary
Sirius couldn’t speak, his blood having run cold inside his veins. He shut his eyes for a moment and then slowly opened them, meeting Remus’ gaze. “It’s not you,” he said quietly. “How could you even think that?”
“What am I supposed to think?” Remus hissed, walking over to Sirius. “Your scars, Sirius, they’re just like mine. They’re just like mine and I – I can’t bear it. When did I hurt you? Why didn’t you say anything? Why didn’t you leave me alone to rot somewhere? Why did you stay my friend?”
They’re nothing like the questions Sirius was afraid to answer because each one is so wrong. They’re wrong and they’re stupid but Sirius can’t find the words to tell Remus so. “It’s not the wolf,” James spoke up, glorious James who was Sirius’ best mate and would know the right words. “It’s his family. His parents. He showed me once. There’s a scar on his left arm, burn mark from a candle.”

Summary
Sirius had the distinct feeling that the only reason all his friends were sitting in a circle in the middle of the Gryffindor common room at one in the morning playing silly muggle party games was for his sake. Some plan James had come up with in a desperate attempt to cheer him up. It wasn’t working. The only reason Sirius himself was even still sitting there rather than going off to sulk in the dorm was because he did not want to have to explain himself or his depressive mood to the whole group. James, Peter and Remus of course knew the reason behind Sirius’ glum mood, but they had kept it properly under wraps at his request. Sirius definitely didn’t want everyone to know what had happened this summer, how his parents had thrown him out onto the streets, barely breathing. He didn’t want to see the pity in their eyes or for them to look at him as weak or pathetic or anything of the sort. He didn’t want them to know how torn up he really was about it.

Summary
“What, exactly, does it mean? That they’re Unforgivable?” Even as preoccupied as he was, Sirius knew the question came out of his mouth well-formed, with a tone of polite and genuine curiosity. He’d had the ability beat into him, quite literally.
“Well,” his professor began, doing a decent job at hiding her disbelief that Sirius was participating in a lecture, “using any one of these curses on a fellow human being is highly illegal and punishable to the fullest extent of wizarding law.”
Sirius couldn’t help it, he let out a strangled sort of laugh. He must have heard her wrong. A tirade of thoughts flashed through his head, yet all he could manage to say was, “what?”
“These are very serious crimes, Mr. Black,” his professor lectured, perhaps mistaking his confusion for something else, “and using any one of them earns the witch or wizard a one-way trip to Azkaban.”
“Well, not everyone,” he replied, before his brain could stop him.

Sirius doesn’t know Unforgivables are unforgivable until Hogwarts.

Summary
There are some things ungoverned by fate. If Sirius Black had gone the path of every Black before him, if he had been in Slytherin, he would have been a very different boy. It would have been a very different war.
