His palm brushed along the curve of her jaw. “Fair skin,” he murmured, as if noting the condition of fruit at a market. “Round cheeks. No pallor. Healthy.”

Penelope jerked her head back, but he followed lazily, lowering his face toward hers until their noses nearly touched.

“And she smells divine,” he whispered, inhaling faintly. “Citrus. Lavender. And… gardenia.”

She glared up at him, but he had already drawn back slightly, his hand now curling in a strand of her hair. He let it fall between his fingers like silk.

“Curly,” he mused. “Long. I’d love to know what colour it is. Perhaps… honey? No. Darker. Chestnut, maybe. You’ll have to tell me.”

    Summary

He was three, looking out the window in the back of the car after his first haircut when he first told them he wanted to go back. He remembers the raindrops that day, following them down the glass. They were going so fast.

“What was that?” his dad laughed, looking to his wife.

His mum turned in her seat, reaching out a hand to Colin’s cheek. There was a moment, then, just one. One where she knew that whatever she thought his statement was did not match his expression.

Violet Bridgerton knows her children, and she knew something was wrong.

But he was three. He was three fucking years old and so she took a breath and shook it away, told him they’d go back to the barber when his hair grew again.

At the time, it was just flashes.

    Hazed flashes, all the time.

He wanted water again, he wanted waves. He wanted the coast and the breeze and her smile.

And this life was nice, but it wasn't that one, and though he was too young to understand, he understood at least that.

That the two lives were separate, even though he was not.

    Summary

Colin has no memory of his life before the orphanage—and he prefers it that way. The past holds nothing for him; his future is all that matters. Smuggling contraband across the border of two warring nations is dangerous, but it’s the fastest way to earn enough gold to escape the city with his closest friend, Penelope.

But when Penelope’s hidden past comes crashing into their carefully built lives, the two are forced to flee—and straight into the hands of the Bridgerton royal family. As secrets unravel and loyalties are tested, Colin must confront a past he thought he could outrun, and a destiny he never chose.

    Summary

In a world where the marriage ritual leaves a permanent mark on you, the word that reflects your match’s first impression of you appears in your skin.

    —•—

Penelope had known since she was eight years old who she would marry. She had heard stories about him, how brave and noble he was, and spent her whole life in love with the boy in the picture.

Something that had never crossed Penelope’s mind, however, was the possibility that Colin Bridgerton would be disappointed upon meeting her.

“Speak now, Penelope, with clarity and conviction. What is the word, bestowed upon you by the gentleman ordained as your match, that defines you in his eyes?”

The celebrant’s voice suddenly felt like a distant hum, her vision blurred by the tears welling up in her eyes. On her wrist, visible to anyone close enough to read it, was written her word with golden letters.

    Shallow.
