"Hornblower turned. Floating lazily toward them was a tangle of old fishing net — seaweed caught in its ropes, barnacles clinging to its knots. It rocked and drifted on the slow tide, as though the ocean had spat it out after swallowing it long ago.
He should have looked away. It was only refuse, after all. But something about the way the ropes twisted and swayed made his stomach tighten, and for a moment, the ship, the crew, even the sunlight itself seemed to fade into another time entirely."
Horatio remembers a moment from his childhood.

"“Hornblower!” Bush called, but the younger man did not turn.
He raised the bucket to his lips and drank, and drank again, as though the act itself were a battle. Water streamed over his face and down his shirt, darkening the cloth where it clung to his chest. When at last he lowered it, he swayed, and Bush saw then how grey his skin had become beneath the grime.
“Mr. Hornblower,” Bush said more sharply, striding forward. “You’ve done enough for the moment. Let that be.”"
During the action at Samaná, Hornblower sufferes from heat exhaustion. Inspired by excerpts from Lieutenant Hornblower
