Taylor triggers with the power to turn into a snake.

Unfortunately, she's not quite sure how to turn back yet, because she triggered like two hours ago and she was asleep when it happened.

On a completely unrelated incident, Amy Dallon found a stray snake in the hospital, and decided to keep it until she could find its owner, because who else could care for a snake better than she could?

If only it would stop being such a pain in the ass!

You'd think that being trapped in stone would mean that, if nothing else, I could get some peace and quiet. Unfortunately, it seems that Celestia has other ideas.

She has appointed these ponies... these 'Keepers', as she calls them, to keep me entertained during my incarceration.

    Honestly? I'd prefer the boredom.

Just an absolutely heartwrenching story, a serious contender for the best fic in this fandom.

Maria Campbell remembers an old life. A life bathed in blood. A fishing hamlet. A research hall of many floors and many patients. And a stranger who insisted on corpse-fishing...

AKA, that fic where a grimdark DLC boss is reincarnated in fluffy otome-land and still acts like she's in a FromSoftware game (that's NOT Cookies & Cream)...

God-tier fic. Incredibly funny, memorable worldbuilding, and lowkey has the best Katarina character arc out of any Hamefura fic I've read. Seriously, the direction that the author takes her character after the Adeth Vacation Arc is probably my favorite handling of Katarina's character of all time. Plus, Katarina gets to show off multiple of her other strengths on several occasions, which is something I always love to see more of—it’s admittedly played for laughs most of the time, but never at Katarina’s expense. And she isn't even the main character! This Maria is an absolute delight and perfect comedic straight man/cultural outsider POV. The convulted crossover setting is surprisingly understandable for me, a reader with no prior knowledge of any of these video games, and the resulting worldbuilding is absolutely delightful. Also very impressive at how interesting and well-handled the post-canon plot is, especially considering that at most, only a fifth of this fic takes place within the canon Hamefura timeframe. And don't worry about the explicit rating, that's only for a handful of chapters past the 200-chapter-mark and they're clearly marked.

There's admittedly a lot of aspects of this fic that might turn readers off (copious references including practically every OC, lack of character growth in Kat's harem, author's belief that Kat explicitly treats everything like a video game, sheer wordcount, brief mention that Anne used to be romantically interested in Katarina which is ultimately plot-irrelevant, and humor is subjective) but if you don't mind or can look past those it's a truly delightful read like no other

    Summary

Idol Hooves holds a special place in Equestria. He's probably the only exiled changeling to serve in the Royal Guard, or at least, that's what he expects, as exiles don't really broadcast that fact. However, it's well known that Princess Celestia loves all of her little ponies, and her guards perhaps more so, and that makes it one of the best ways for a changeling to discreetly feed.

But how does a changeling even get there, let alone get exiled in the first place? For that matter, why would it ever go to Canterlot? Set a number of years before the series proper, before Luna’s redemption, Idol details how he was exiled, the ponies he’s met, and the series of misadventures that led him to joining the Royal Guard, and should continue a good ways into the series, as something of an alternate perspective.

Soon, he’ll have to deal with a boisterous new princess to serve and a royal wedding in the works bringing a third to power. Will his old instincts bring this new life crashing down around him? What precipitates Chrysalis’s ill-fated assault on Canterlot? Is it really so wrong for a changeling to enjoy good craftsmanship to an obsessive degree?

Probably my favorite fic in this fandom, just an all-around fun time. The protag is delightfully charming and one of my favorite OCs in fanfiction. His interactions with the supporting cast are great, and it's a joy to see how he accidentally ends up as such an ingrained figure in Canterlot through his friendships. This fic also has my favorite take on MLP changeling lore, and some of my favorite misunderstandings-based comedy. Bit of a slow start, but finds its footing as soon as Idol meets other characters to bounce off of, and especially once he meets Topaz and subsequently moves to Canterlot

    Bookmarker's Notes

Platonic ideal of what I want out of these kinds of AUs that change one detail and follow a mostly canon-shaped plot. Lots of exellent character arcs and plot divergences stem from Ash being a Zorua, and the author isn’t afraid to seriously shake up the stations of canon. Ash’s (and Misty's) pokemon have probably the best characterization I've seen for a pokemon team in any fic I've read in this fandom, easily a favorite of mine. The pacing is excellent, with enough time in each location to feel like a journey instead of a montage, but without dragging the plot to a standstill. The tone has a great balance of serious drama and levity. The worldbuilding and blending of game and later gen lore into the Kanto arc is great and really makes the setting feel alive. Really does justice to the "protag is a pokemon" fic concept in a way that's perfect for me
