    Trevor couldn't stand fire.

    Don’t get him wrong; he could handle a candle flame or a campfire, even a hearth, but what he couldn’t handle or stand. What drove him into a frenzy, what made him go batshit, was burnings. Out-of-control burnings: fields, forests, the occasional trash pile set on fire, particularly housefires, and God forbid, humans.

    The stench of burning flesh was not one easily forgotten, even after six or nine years. It had a way of sticking and sneaking up on you when you least expected.
