Today, Ronan looks down at the black screen, and for a single moment he aches with the loneliness of a needy thing.
He shakes his head, scowling at himself in disgust. He's not Gansey, sighing over the phone in the dead of night, waiting with bated breath for Blue to call after spending an entire day with her.
It's just that Ronan hasn't seen Adam in five days.
Every morning he sits in the BMW in sleep clothes he hasn't changed out of, checks his silent phone, and grips the steering wheel with white knuckles. He never starts the car.

Summary
Every instinct is screaming at Ronan to go, to try and do anything and everything to fix the mess that he’s made.
But he cannot bring himself to get up. The magnitude of what he has done is finally setting in, and Ronan knows that even he can’t come back from a fuckup this bad. Not even Gansey, who has put up with every single shitty thing Ronan has done, is going to stick with him through this one. And worst of all, there is no way that he gets to keep Adam Parrish through this.
There’s no reason to try without Adam, not really.

"As Adam drove back to the Barns that night, he was thinking that he must have been wrong about being exhausted when he woke up. He was now a million miles past simply exhausted. At the factory, his head started aching, and by the time he was leaving Boyds it was pounding in time with his heartbeat. At some point between bending over the hood of some car or another, his sinuses started feeling swollen and he found himself in the impossible juxtaposition of simultaneously not being able to breathe through his congestion and wiping his running nose on the sleeve of his coveralls every few minutes. On top of that, he hadn’t really eaten anything besides the apple he brought for breakfast and a few bites of his granola bar for lunch, his stomach twisting whenever he thought about eating anything more.
As much as he wanted to deny it, Adam was sick."

Ethan is still speaking—yelling—and Adam is—he’s a little nauseous. Part of him doesn’t want to be a part of this conversation at all, and a more traitorous part of him wants to call her back, but Ethan still has his cell phone.
Adam thinks, isn’t this how everything went long last time? Adam hid paycheck stubs from his parents and got caught in his own web of lies. Now he’s lied to Ethan and he has been caught for that as well. He never learns. He always makes the same mistakes.
Adam dampens his lips and chooses his next words carefully. “I don’t understand why you’re angry.”
