Issa huffs. “Do you think,” she shoves her phone in his face, “he’s cute?”
“Oh my god, I’ll tell you if you get out of my space for a second,” he squints and pushes her arm away, trying to get a good look at the picture. Good jawline, solid head of hair, nice muscles, kind eyes. He’s attractive, in a young Charlie Swan kind of way. He also looks potentially insufferable. The nail polish, the rings decorating one hand with an iced coffee in the other. Anton’s shocked that his crocheted sweater top isn’t adorned with the words ‘6’4 feminist.’

Shauna Shipman has her first (and God willing, last) kid at seventeen years old. Her parents raise Callie while she goes off to Brown. "Until you can support her," they say again and again.
And then college is over, and Shauna is back in town, trying to reconnect with the four-year-old daughter she barely knows. She's not sure she can support herself, let alone Callie.
But it just so happens Shauna knows Callie's Pre-K teacher pretty well already. Or did, anyway. Back before everything blew up.

Frankly, Jackie is a lot better with kids than Shauna is.
