    Yours most sincerely by TheGreenMeridian

Still, I am delighted for you, even if I fear I shall soon be losing you to Gibraltar. Ann and the children shan’t forgive you at all if you do not come home for at least a month before you make the move permanently. When your darling’s posting is over, perhaps you shall consent to settling near enough to us that we might have your company regularly.

    Summary

At night - he still thinks about time for sleep as 'night', even when polar day spreads above him, immeasurable and empty - at night he becomes Terror. He grasps the ice with his anchors, and the snow stays under his fingernails. His ribs are aching, cracking under the slow, blind, unrelenting pressure. One time he wakes up from acute pain in his back, and in those foggy moments between sleeping and waking, when mind threads strange routes, he thinks with certainty - his back aches, because the Terror's mainmast has given in, has broken under the wind and its own weight.

    The left hand by luthiele

But the ship lives on her own, breathes, chatters, works - on her own. Blanky schools young Hartnell in the art of ice-reading or merrily discusses something with James, they both laugh and swing their arms. When they will understand that two daredevils like them can actually make an alliance, the world will tremble, Francis thinks with warmth.

And he hadn't known the name of James' cheetah before, had he? James never told. Or did he? Or he did, during the first two years of the expedition, when he went through his vast collection of adventures several times. Or he did, and Francis just forgot. Forgot then and remembered now, it happens sometimes, it's possible, the memory is a tricky and unpredictable thing.

But Little, with his ever present earnestness and thoroughness, cathehizes Jopson about intricacies of lieutenant's duties.

“You love us more than God”.

And everything is suddenly clear to Francis, blindingly clear, and it robs him of breath, of words. He understands, he knows, he does.

    Summary

Francis heard a small mew and looked down to see a cat waiting expectantly on the doorstep.

“Was that you knocking at my door?” He asked the cat.

“Mew,” said the cat, apparently affirmatively, as it- he- trotted up the step and straight into Francis’ flat.

Francis' fledgling friendship with his former office nemesis is put into doubt after a disastrous dinner date, but when a mysterious cat turns up at Francis' door, it quickly becomes apparent that both their relationship and the strange cat are not entirely as they seem.

the Hidden Paw by Blue_Sparkle, fadladinida

Francis hadn’t been able to resist taking a photo of the cat, fast asleep and curled like a fluffy croissant on the sofa. He angled the phone to Le Vesconte, who clapped his hands together with delight.

“Oh thank goodness for that!” He exclaimed.

    “What?”

“Thank goodness that you have such a lovely cat,” Le Vesconte said smoothly. “And how is he? Like his luxuries I bet. What are you feeding him?”

“Not particularly, quite happy with Whiskas and a couple of toys,” Francis was unable to resist a fond smile upon the remembrance of the cat. “Not high maintenance at all.”

Le Vesconte let out a low whistle.

“Fuck me,” he breathed. “He must really love you.”

    Summary

“One must always demonstrate love and understanding to one’s brothers, which all of the men on this ship are bound to be,” Sir John continues, “Before you go, it would please me greatly to see you kiss and make up.”

James had not thought Sir John a man of a particularly humorous inclination.

    Get Along Shirt by clandestinegardenias

“One must always demonstrate love and understanding to one’s brothers, which all of the men on this ship are bound to be,” Sir John continues, “Before you go, it would please me greatly to see you kiss and make up.”

James had not thought Sir John a man of a particularly humorous inclination.

He attempts to force a chuckle in response to this sorry attempt at a joke, struggling for several long seconds before the silent anticipation building around them begins to convey that, perhaps, Sir John was not joking after all.

James nervously glances sidelong at Francis, who, he finds, is not laughing either.

In fact, he looks downright murderous. Not in the usual way, however, and it surprises James to discover that he knows Francis’ various expressions well enough to make the distinction. This is not the look Francis fixes James with when they fight. That look is red hot, mobile, alive. This look, right now, is its antithesis. It is pale, cold, and far, far more dangerous.

It occurs to James that, perhaps, this is what Francis looks like when he is well and truly angry.

Which suggests, oddly enough, that he has never once in their entire acquaintance been well and truly angry at James .
