There weren’t many of them left. Not that the general hybrid population was down, obviously not that, but that so many of her friends had all fled.
And the thing was: it was supposed to be impossible. The city was so guarded, the power roles ever so present, and humans wielded so. Many. Guns. You weren’t supposed to be able to survive, let alone escape.
Pearl had never really been brave. She would look at her hands and could only shake in fear, awaiting the day that she would finally adopt her hybrid traits. She didn’t even know what they were supposed to be. Because you weren’t supposed to be able to steal your documents, either. And yet, how many of her friends had managed that?

In a time of great desperation, to choose between a flaming, broken land or a twisted one, is there really a choice at all?
