Consider this: Boy One meets Boy Two meets Boys Three to Seven. Boy One is stuck with Boy Three because the world is cruel enough to make them roommates.
Boy Three is beautiful, like a summer storm in June. His mouth is a switchblade. Try as he might, Boy One can never forecast him. He always forgets his umbrella.
Boy Three draws the borders of his personal space with measuring tape. Literal lines. On the floor.
Boy One hates that Boy Three will not let him in. Despite that, when Boy Three walks into a room, Boy One looks and looks and can’t look away.
Boy One hates himself for that, too.

Let us approach the problem of two boys again:
Boy One is louder than he means to be. He wants so loudly that Boy Three is still learning not to mistake that want for threat.
Boy Three is still working on softness. He doesn’t know how to say I love you in a way that fits. So he says Brush your teeth when all he means is I want to kiss you. He shares his lip balm with Boy One. Slips candies into his pocket when no one is watching, so Boy One won’t chew his lip raw.
If Boy One listens closely enough, he might hear the word Love. Even so, he only gets it right half the time.
Come closer, listen. I’m trying. Sometimes, words are the problem. But if they keep showing up, doesn’t that count for something?
