Belle is all for that idea except for the fact that her father's latest choice, Sir Gaston, is an awful excuse for a human being. She comes up with a compromise of sorts. She'll marry someone but it will be her choice. She even presents an interesting way to go about it, inviting any unmarried men to the castle to 'compete' to win her hand in marriage. Her father is not pleased at the thought of a peasant marrying his daughter but he has to choose his battles, he supposes.

"You know, when I made a deal for a caretaker, I assumed you would at least be somewhat competent," she heard from nearby.
With reluctance, she lifted her head and looked to the top of the stairs where her master stood. His eyes were sparking with humor. Indignation replaced her barely developed fear. He was laughing at her! With a huff, she pushed herself up onto her knees.
“I couldn’t see the stairs properly and I dropped the basket,” she explained, trying to keep her true feelings out of her voice.
“Yes, I gathered that much, dearie,” came the somewhat snide reply. She could still hear a lilt in his voice indicating he still found the situation to be all too amusing. Her blood boiled in response.
“It’s not easy to go up and down stairs in a ball gown in normal circumstances!” she snapped as she finally got to her feet.
