Summary
Canute does whatever he can to keep Thorfinn, though it might cost him everything.
“You want to kill me now.”
The words steal his breath with their truth. Thorfinn looks at him, from under his filthy bangs, eyes piercing and bruised. Something in Canute’s chest flips over at that look, at how wounded he is. He’s broken. He’s been broken from the first moment they met, but now he’s lost even Askeladd to hold his pieces together.
“But if you fight me like this, it’s not fair. You have to wait until I get stronger. Be my guard until then, and I’ll duel you, warrior to warrior.”
Thorfinn’s gaze is unflinching. Canute reaches behind him and pulls the dagger from the folds of his fur-lined cloak. The blade is a part of Thorfinn, like the crown is a part of Canute, now. He hands it over, hilt first.
“Or, you can kill me today. Right now, right here.”

“Don’t you have other places to be?” Takumi complains, pulling a chair to sit across from Aotsuki.
“This is my usual spot,” Aotsuki says, “If anything, you’re the one in my space.”
Takumi bristles. “Well… Well, I barely study so the one time I try to, I deserve to have the space.”
Aotsuki laughs, undoubtedly at him, and it makes Takumi bristle even more.

He doesn’t think he’s done anything particularly worthy of karmic punishment—he helps old ladies cross the street, he holds the door open for people, and usually does his best to avoid talking shit about people, too. So what if he’s looked past a few street fights? His magic is restricted like everyone else’s, and he’s no fighter. He’s really, truly lived a normal life, so there’s absolutely no reason he should be blindfolded, gagged, and probably in a basement, if the musty air is anything to go by.
