Summary
dead ringer [idiom] - a person who looks exactly like another. one theory is that it originates from people's fear of being buried alive. in the 18th century particularly, a dying person would ask, upon their death, to be buried with a rope that attached to a bell on the surface. if it transpired that the deceased was not in fact dead, then they could use the rope to ring the bell. once rescued, the saved person would be an exact copy of the "deceased" person.
Jayce peeks at himself from under the fringe of his lanky, unruly hair, and sees the way he looks at his own hammer, then Jayce’s corrupted one, the way it pulses in time to what’s holding Viktor’s body together. It’s almost fascinating, watching the way his own face looks when he’s piecing something together, eyebrows furrowing in a way he didn’t know they did, nose scrunching briefly before he finally looks over at him. Jayce flinches at his gaze and glances away, listening to his own ragged breath as he tries to calm his racing heart.

Viktor wiped its cheek dry with the corner of the blanket, and sucked in a breath when the calf opened its eyes. Brilliant gold stared back at him, full of curiosity.
“Hello there, little one,” Viktor cooed. The calf’s button nose twitched and it simply blinked. “You’re alright, we’ve got you.”

“I do know. I know right now you’re too scared to admit that yes, after all these years being side by side in the lab, watching him day in and day out working himself into the ground to realize your dream, you are completely head-over-heels in love with him."
The other Jayce takes a shuddering, angry breath.
“So, you push it down. You hide it away and spend your time sucking up to rich investors and the other councilors, trying to win favor and gain attention so you don’t have to think about how much losing Viktor is going to destroy you.”

A million more days spent strapped to a roller coaster of love to resentment to love again? Jayce thought he’d left that cycle behind when he graduated high school. It was supposed to be a product of teenage hormones, it wasn’t supposed to be ingrained in him for life.
Jayce has a mind that’s rigged to self-destruct, and the smallest sense of rejection can send him into a spiral. Viktor tries his best to understand.
